You are wondering why? me too as for what to do with the red and brown wires like I said along with that green plug unplug it through it over your shoulder where it lands who cares but that mite be littering so I guess you better drop it in the next closest trash can that will do and like BD said and what I posted earlier any three blade-post-pin-prong which way you want to call it will work you don't need to buy a high dollar flasher. _________________ where its cold and snowy |

Ok. Unplugged the green plug that IS connected to the 2 prong round flasher and put in the 3 prong I got from a VW parts place here in Portland.
Got power and now when pull out the flasher knob or put turn signal switch to right or left the same is as before. Both green arrow lights come on but no flash. The added thing now is that when push in the flasher knob or cancel right or left turn signal there is a brief buzz that is heard. Reason why they bypassed flasher direct to fuses ?
Think I should go get another flasher like the one that was on there to start with and see if that works ?
Or do you think its time for me to take it to a professional.
ME...Im just a guy who has had several bugs and one other bus over the years who has decided that if I am going to own one again i want to know how to work on them or at least the basics. BUT >>Deer in the headlights when it comes to electrical. LOL. Embarassing at 50
I am third owner of this bus and PO had it for 27 yrs. So good thing is that it hasnt been completely jacked over the years
I am open to learning !! !! or advice !! |

both green arrows are suppose to light that is right. Try the four ways see if they work you may have a bad emergency switch of which may have been the problem all a long. Also are any of the lights coming on outside the bus.
From what I see this is not a bypass its a remote mount so you don't have to pull the fuse panel to get to the relay and for some reason they decided to use a 2 bladed relay which you can do. _________________ where its cold and snowy

| Thanks man. I will see if lights come on outside. They did not before !! Will a 4 prong fit where this 3 prong plugs in ? |

That green plug thing is just a remote mount thing thats all its the first time I seen one used here. the 3 prong is the right one now did you try the 4 way to see if they worked I reread the thread and you said they didn't before. Next I would look where the flasher plugs in on the fuse panel and make sure the wires are all there and where they should be. three of them well sort of really four 2 singles and 1 with 2 wires. the 2 singles a brown in slot 31 and a white in the + (or 49) slot and blue/blue-red in the 49a slot. check that then we will move on. _________________ where its cold and snowy |

Thanks Bigbore. I will do that next. Also I decided to check all the bulbs again. It has been raining here last few days and when I took off the lens
for the front pass side it has alot of water inside. Since there is a bit of corrosion on the inside I took out the assembly and the wires behind are dry and not corroded. It is clear that it is not the first time it has taken in water. Thinking I should it change it out anyway and wondering if it has to do with my problem. The bulb does not seem to want to come out but is not blown.
If the circuit for all lights is somehow broken would this too cause my problem ? Feel dumb if that is what caused this in first place !

So when I found all the water in the assembly bigbore I started wondering if that was the
problem to begin with. Whether it is or not I want to replace it |

you say they were working then all the sudden they weren't then all the bulbs didn't go out all at the same time well the odds are what? you may find you have a emergency switch now dead. check for power at the switch them pull it and check for power out at the bulb holders or turn of the key flip the turn signal switch left or right the arrow lights should be on in the dash check for power out at the bulb holders no power? then a bad emergency switch is likely sense you already put a new flasher relay in. _________________ where its cold and snowy |

| Ok so I just scored. Called around to some repair shops and found a great condition replacement housing. Gonna put that on and then check the switch for power |

Ok so I put in the new turn signal assembly and new bulb and all is the same. Green arrow lights come on in the dash when flasher is pulled or turn signals are put to left or right but no flashing and no turn signal lights or flashers outside come on. Same buzz sound with the new flasher as well.
When I turned on the headlights both come on but only the drivers side parking light comes on. arggg |

The headlights and running lights/parking lights should all come on in spite of the flasher issue right? Gonna check for power to the connectors. Which is white and which is dark?

| All headlights and parking lights work and are getting juice but the flasher connection is not getting juice. Will change the e flasher. Damn I wish it would stop raining. |

Bigbore I meant that the dark color connector at the turnsignal assembly housing is not getting juice. The white wire is getting juice and running lights are working. Am I jumping the gun to be changing the e flasher switch?
420goat posted that he had same issue and was e-flasher switch.

Similar question, also with a 1971 bus. When a turn signal is used L or R, are both of the indicator lights in the cluster supposed to flash at same time, or left for left, right for right?
