I have just recently been reading the forums here, heck, i just found TheSamba a few weeks ago. But my question is...
I am on the look out to for a Notch or Fasty project (not a big square fan - Please don't hate), but would prefer a Notch. My question is if there are any advantages or disavantages to getting an earlier model (early to late 60s) as opposed to a later model (69 and up - ones with IRS stock). I drove around a 69 bug for a while (my dad mostly rebuilt it) but have wanted to do my own VW for a while ever since. Now with bugs, i know that there is almost like a "status" for owning an older beetle, like an early oval, or even split oval. Is that the same for Type3's. Are older models more "prestiges" to own, or are they all the same with T3's? Not that i REALLY care, if i can find a straight body, no rust '65 for example, or a straight body, no rust '71, I'll take either or.
But i just was wondering about the "status" of owning one year over another, and other advantages and disadvantages (such as '69 and up = IRS)
Thanks in advance for any advice. |

Unlike type 1 the reason to buy a 69 and earlier type 3 is for body style changes. I actually prefer 67 and earlier due to dash, seats, door handles and other misc earlier , more desireable aspects. 61-63 and 68-69 have bullet front turn signals and small rear reflectors 64-67 have wrap around turn signals and longer rear reflectors. some 68-89 had fuel injection... and I think on a type 3 it changed from swing to irs in 66. I know that 65 and earlier have wide 5 drums like an early type 1 and 66 and later are four lug. I just dont remember the rear end changed the same time as the breaking system. 66 was also the first year for front disc brakes on a type 3. Hope some of this helps.. It's mostly body style though...
