Sorry to have to put this here, but nothing on a search and knew you guys would be able to help out. I am going to have a stock rebuild done of my 1600 FI engine. I have one company with stock 85.5 Mahle pistons rings and barrels for only 150?? I see others getting closer to 300 for this set. What could be different?? I am scared to pull the trigger and get the wrong parts. Thanks

$150 = cast, like the pistons that came from VW.

$300 = probably forged pistons.

I rebuilt a FI engine for a customer up the road from me using AA's. AA's are fine for a stock rebuild if your on a budget. Shes been driving it for over a year now. You dont need forged pistons for yours if its all stock.

Now even more confused. Are there two different levels of Mahle piston sets??? Is there a different part number for the steel skirted ones that you are talking about?? They have AA pistons, but they are even less than the Mahle's.

What are you talking about, the little tabs on the inside? That's not exactly the piston skirt...

I heard the Mahle pistons are supplied by AA. Too bad there isn't a stock set made in U.S.A.

genuine Mahle 85.5s are excellent P&Cs.

well the set I got a month ago,(cust brought to me) looked like poop and were more than 10 grams appart, ended up getting another set to make 1 set close enough to balance. the wristpin bore had a big chamfer on some and a slight one on 1 side of 2.

I think he paid 2x as much for these cast ones as he should of,and were told they were forged.I would be happy to use a better aa piston over the steel struted brazilla ones.wish I would of put 90.5,s in it.but that dog wont hunt.

FFS- it took me 10 minutes to fix just that one line, learn how to type man! Rolling Eyes

Stop blaming pistons for your lack of tuning acumen, I've been boosting them for over 3 years now without a single issue. If you're blowing them up, you're running it wrong.

most people on boost make the mistake of running too much timing, and run too rich too.
