Please share your descriptions of VW air cooled horsepower. Feel free to use words like insane, total insanity, traction problems, drag race only. Also describe your motor if you want. Help us folk decide if we need 140hp or 220hp for our next motor.

Example
100HP) Fun to drive and good power on the hwy…..

ahh!!! another one lol, see this thread first... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=414003

basically figure out your vehicles weight, then figure out your power, then figure out if its safe to drive on the road Very Happy

here is mine: 1700 lbs + 125 hp + disc brakes and suspension mods = awesome car on twisty roads. I also have driven it all over california and highway 1 a number of times

Is that you talking, or the ghost of Gene?

90 is nothing, any well sorted 1776 should be able to put that down. I'm happy for the time being with the 150whp my 1915 turbo puts down, but it won't be long till I'm seeking more. I figure that based on where I'm at now, 220-230hp is what I'm after in the end. Any more than that gets uncontrollable without expensive chassis mods.

Going uphill with a stock bug, the gears are just a mechanical way of changing engine pitch and sound pressure. Nothing else happends.
At 70 hp there is light at the end of the tunnel.
100 hp is seriously quick at redlights.
150 hp and up is better than sex.

Heeh ! Aggree.

I use to lay it down like this:

65-70 hp. All beetles should have had that from new.
100hp. Gets you a nice nippy beetle.
125-150 hp. Modern cars, beware.
150-180 hp. You need to know what youre doing.
180 - 240 hp. Takes a skilled driver to handle.
240 + Show off Very Happy

Why not just make a custom set of wires with a Y splice in them. Then you could just run one distributor.

65-70 perfect daily commuter
100-120 Fun... you'll soon be asking for more
150-170 Perfect for a well sorted chassis in the twistys (who wants to go in a straight line anyways..... get that V8 out of your head)
180-200+ forget it , your only putting it on a trailer to get it to the drag strip

just my opinion...

it's all good clean fun till somebody gets thier eye poked out.
I like the strawbearry muffens.
there is never enough horse power, but having what you need at the moment is what counts.
