I just got a 74 bus with dual 36mm dellortos. I have never worked on dual carbs before and don't know where to start. The carbs are way out of wack and the bus is sputtering and backfiring and farting, when I come to a stop it will make a muffled pop out of the tail pipe. the valves are set and the timing is right. I just need to get the carbs dialed in and learn how.
So I am wondering if there is anybody out there from portland, Or that wants to show me what screws to turn and how to start maintaining these carbs. we can work out some sort of trade for your time spent.
I took it to always vee-dub, but the bus came out running worse, and Heckmann & Thiemann don't work on after market parts. so help me please.
Thanks,
Brandon |

I have dual 36mm DRLAs on my bus, and I love them. They are great carbs! My recommendation to you is to get the Dellorto Superformance Tech book, seen here:
http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=2
I consider it a "must have" for Dual Dells, and it will help you set them up and tune them. One of the import parts places around there should have one.
First things to check - make sure there are no vacuum leaks (carb to manifold, manifold to head, vacuum line(s) and fuel lines good, etc.). Everything is snug, no loose nuts/bolts. The carbs have to be in sync - opening the same amount at the same time, and sucking the same volume of air. As you move the throttle arm, watch to see that the arms on the carbs are doing the same thing at the same time. Do you have a sync tool? There are many many more things, but these are some of the first on the list.
What distributor do you have?
I'd say to check out Strictly German, but I'm not even sure to what degree that shop is open anymore.
Wish I could help out firsthand, but I'm in Eugene about 100 miles away _________________ 1963 Manx copy

I run a compuserve electronic ignition with no points. and have hydraulic lifters. I also have an electronic fuel pump, I have read that I need a fuel pressure regulator to keep the pressure down, is this true? and would you suggest one over the other?
I will definetely get that book.
Is there a model number any where on the carbs so I can find out exactely what they are?
I don't have a sync tool. How much does one of those cost usually?

Well, that's the ignition module you're using, but do you know the # on the distributor itself? Could be a 009 mechanical advance, or a stock vacuum advance one... either one will work, but the stock vacuum model works quite nicely with the Dells. Either way....
Dells like somewhere around 3lbs. pressure if I remember right... I suppose you may need a regulator for your current pump, I'm not sure about that one. I use the stock mechanical pump and it works well.
I think somewhere on "outer" side of the carb casting it says something on the base, mine just says 36DRLA if I recall correctly. But if you have two throats per side, or one throat per cyinder, you have DRLAs.
Get a sync tool like this:
http://www.aircooled.net/new-bin/viewproductdetail.php?keyword2=TZE0021&cartid=
The spendy one on the left with the dial and #'s on it, that's the one you want. They are ususally $40-50, but worth it. The other ones are not as good - some of them are okay, others are garbage. _________________ 1963 Manx copy

I don't know if Strictly German is around or not either .. in fact, I wasn't sure they were in Portland. Still finding my way around town, only been here since February.. Heck&Thiemann .. I've got a long story involving the lack of a D-jetronic tester, misinformation given to the owner (there's no such thing as a fuel pressure sensor!), and failure to diagnose a faulty vacuum advance canister. But I'm not going to say any more 'cuz it's not Bus related.
Maybe give Trafton's a call..? Ron's is no more .. and since I work on my Bus (and my other VWs) myself I've got no experience with the shops around here. |

Don't even bother with the unisyn unless it's a vintage version. The reproductions are useless.
Stick with the STE synchrometer. The price is normally reasonable (I've seen it sold for $84 at one place!) but the adapters are pure ripoff. _________________ '78 Westfalia CDN
