Another question for the experts...

I am considering putting my 51 shell on a 64 chassis for the time being until I can find time to restore the orginal chassis propperly.

Also planning on running pretty low and dont fancy flatting pans on the 51 chassis.

What work is needed to fit a 51 bug shell on a 64 bug chassis?

Thanks

Freddie

if your 51 runs lever shocks you`re gonna run into problems with the lack of any shock tower recesses in the rear inner arches.

even if you have the telescoping shocks you will still have problems. The shock towers on a split are much shorter than on a '64 so it would involve cutting the body and adding reinforcing plates.

I've seen it done. A friend of mine had a 51 on a 64 pan and it worked fine. It was done years before he got it and restored the car and it worked fine. He drove it ass his daily driver.

51 is when they stopped lever shocks, so it's still 50/50 chance till he checks this car.

lever shocks or not, it does not matter. The body is the same on the lever shock and telescoping '51. The '64 shock towers are taller than the shock towers on a '51 pan so the body will need cutting.

Here is mine...

You either have to cut the body or the tower... I choose to cut the 62 pan rather than to cut the 52 body...

I wil be doing the same thing with my 52 (when i get back to work on it). When you cut the chassis, where does the top of the shock mount to? Do you have a pic of the shock in place?
Cheers

I have the OG 52 pan, just using the 62 pan to transport the 52 body around while I get some things done to the pan/body.

I think a person could fab up something pretty quick. Maybe a bolt going through the hole in the tower with spacers??? I saved the tower tops to be welded back on if I decide to "restore" the 62 pan.

Another issue would be the 62 front end clears the 52 body but leaves no room for the bolt to pass trough top shock tower. (So the bolt end would rub the body because there is no cut out.)

I don't see a problem with it. Honestly it's all a matter of perspective. Sure, a split shell on a somewhat later pan is not and never will be 100% original.

But consider this; one of the most covetted VW's in the world is the VW38 found in Lithuania.....yet practically nothing on that car is original.

The only difference is a gentlemen's agreement that the Lithuanian VW 38 is so important a car that later parts or reproduction parts were given some sort of Papal Dispensation and therefore the car is a 1938 VW.

Yet to some folks a split built 15 years later on a later pan isn't the real deal.

Interesting, huh?

Unfortunately that group of folks is known as the B.M.V.

Since the title follows the pan and not the body, legally what you will have is a 1964 beetle with a split window body. Most people take this into account when they buy a car which is why a split body on a later pan is not worth nearly as much as the "real deal"

That being said, if I had a split body laying around you can bet your ass that I would mount it on a later pan and drive it until I could afford to restore it.

What not to cut, when putting it on a new pan:

my 52 split is on a 70's pan and the title follows the body on my car. the vin tag in the nose of the car has the id numbers on it.
