Hello

Can anyone's explain how the clutch on a 356 differs from the clutch on a VW? I seem to remember reading that one was deeper than the other. Also, I've read that a 356 disc has more material on it (thicker) than a VW clutch. Are any of the parts interchangeable?

Cheers,

Paul

180mm clutches have the same thickness VW/356. 356 always used sprung center discs. 200 mm VW disc thickness are at the lower worn limit when brand new for 356

To add to what Jack supplied:

Actually, if the flywheel of your 356 engine needs work (surfacing, lightening, neck surface truing, dowel land milling, etc), have the depth ground for VW specs and use those VW parts. It's basically a 1mm difference when it's "like new" and most old original flywheels need some help anyway.

It is not necessarily a one-way trip, either.

For the same reason many other 356 items are compromised now that we eschewed in the past, the better quality OEM 356 clutch stuff is less needed due to less miles driven than when the cars were 'only' 20 or 30 years old. (pick a smiley, any smiley, happy or sad or both)

Or you can mill the required distance off the mounting face on the pressure plate. That way no modification needed on the flywheel.
I did this on my 912 engine and it works fine.

That's another way, thank you, but I'd rather take some thickness off the bulk of the flywheel than the mounting perimeter of the clutch cover plate.
It may actually be less expensive to spend the extra money for the correct 356 spec parts if just the driven plate needs replacement and the cover and flywheel are OK.

I always thought it was the other way around?
