I don't know about Manson's VW, but allegedly the split bus that belonged to Gary Hinman (killed by Beausoleil, from the Family) was recently found, at least what is left of it
There was a video on you tube, but it's not anymore. |

My good friend has been a Prison Guard for Pelican Bay, as well as Cochoran State Prison and said that charles Manson was Extermely polite. I do NOT condone his actions but it would be cool to find a bus with History that he may have owned. _________________ RUSTFARMER....I like anything old and rusty! |

if you must know. why don't you just write him a letter?
My uncle worked at Corcran and let a guy into Manson cell to spray for bugs interrupting his nap. he was not happy _________________ www.56panel.com

The "family", or at least Manson and some friends, traded a Volkswagen bus as down payment for an old yellow school bus... October, 16, 1967 at a Chevron gas station in Sacramento.
"The Family" by Ed Sanders, page 18.
That's all I could find so far about Manson's alleged VW. Altough is well known that "the family" traded, bought and stole all kind of cars in the 67-69 period: dune buggys used in Death Valley, the black school bus, the '59 Ford some members used for the killings...etc
I did read somewhere that Manson also had a dune buggy specially customized for him... |

It's a good thing Manson's bus will probably never be found. All it would do is draw more negative attention to the hobby. There's more than enough nicely preserved and well documented "evil" VWs out there as it is. _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:

How is one to know his bus? Did he leave a bloody note in the battery tray? This seems to be a moot point. Why worry or bother? Just my two cents. |

I think this should be treated like the Germans treated Hitlers bunker where he shot himself: they buried it, paved it over, and now it's a strip mall parking lot. Historically we shouldn't forget evil doings, but manson was just a pyschopath and I see no good coming from remembering him or his deeds. |

Some years ago, a friend made a short spoof of Manson using my bus.

No way under no circumstances would I care to own or find manson's bus, I don't care if it were the first barndoor. Just too creepy for me, I have mixed feelings about even some of the early kdf's _________________ Instagram @graysvws

I wouldn't care if Hitler or Dahmer drove it. It's a car/bus. Haunting's and ghosts are for my grand daughters' pajama parties. |

Hey, anyone know what happened to Charles Manson's BD?
I was just watching a special on him on the history channel, and it showed his bus a few times. Just wondering if anyone knew what happened to it, as it'd really be a neat find/piece of history, even if it isn't a good one. |

While it's anyone's guess if the bus above was once owned by Manson, it's not, "The" Manson bus. Meaning it's not the famous one that was "borrowed" from Hinman and driven by the family. The Hinman/Manson was a 1958 and was most likely red (possibly a deluxe or with the deluxe trim added).
The most credible (and repeated) story is that it was abandoned by the family along the road and towed by LASO around 1969. It was likely scrapped thereafter (unless it was claimed by next of kin which is unlikely considering the circumstances and what they were worth at the time).
Interesting side note: I've always been surprised how much attention the Bundy Bug gets, but the school bus the family drove is still up there in the hills relatively intact at Barker ranch.
Leslie Van Houten just got paroled in April... crazy. |
