So, a couple weeks ago I posted about an 82 westy diesel. So I bought it! first step clean out the mice aftermath. So mask on, gloves on,let's go!
So definetly a basket case. 1.6 diesel is mixing fluid, but who wants that anyway. To keep tings simple I'm going AAZ 1.9td. I'll have to yank out all of the cabinets, clean out the rest. Figure out the rest of the interior, not keeping any piece of cloth from it.
Here's the after shot after some pressure washing. much better.

New to it seats, from MKII GTI/GTX. they've been sitting around for years. Time to put them to good use. Hopefully I can find a similar fabric match for the back bench. Mounting them to the westy swivel bases looks like it will need a bit of customizing, but i think the end result will be worthwhile.

I'm planning on pulling the full interior . A colour change is in the cards . Still trying to decide that one , leaning towards darker blues . I want the interior stripped enough that I can pressure wash it inside . |

carpeting responds really well to pressure washing, do outside of van so you can really clean it right thru and air dry it well. Did mine several times, threw out the padding due to mice & squirrel waste materials. My front carpet came out looking almost new! For sure go in the dash and also A columns on each side. I found a mummified squirrel in my drivers A Column. His tail got caught somehow I figure. Get lots of toothbrushes. It's worth all the work.
Nice job so far! _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

Carpet is brown and worn definetly going bye bye. I have worked on one worse mouse vehicle before. I once traded a paint job in exchange for repairing wiring on a 97 passat. The car had been left sitting for some time. The owner had left dog food in the trunk. The mice ate through the wiring at the firewall, went under the carpet, under the back seat and ate the food. Compared to that passat, this westy is a walk in the park. |

OK. My carpet is choc brown and it came back like new. Guess I was lucky. Main salon one I threw out tho and ALL the underpadding went garbage ho too! Good luck and pay attention to detail now and it'll be much easier to keep clean. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

DON'T! Bad idea. Never mind the chlorine gas, it makes hydrochloric acid!
While reading on on the Harvata virus last week I learned that a 10% bleach spray is fine. From http://www.doh.wa.gov/YouandYourFamily/IllnessandDisease/Hantavirus.aspx Thoroughly wet contaminated areas including trapped mice, droppings, and nests with a 10% hypochlorite (bleach) solution: Mix 1˝ cups of household bleach in 1 gallon of water (or 1 part bleach to 9 parts water). Once everything is soaked for 10 minutes, remove all of the nest material, mice or droppings with damp towel and then mop or sponge the area with bleach solution.
Check your knee bar after you pull the dash and heater box. I had to attach a rubber hose to feed in there to get everything out. Then I blocked the driver's side off with coast steel wool/scrubber. The driver side feed does nothing on a Westy.
I soaked all my plastic heater tubes/dash vents in vinegar for a short while, then simple green for a longer time - or vice-versa. I found 2 dead mice behind the heater box. The nest in the heater box against the resistor must have burned slightly at one time - or caused high resistance, there was significant plastic distortion around the resistor area
Use the search to find way to limit mouse entry into the van. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

Then is turns to a gas. Not acid but chlorine. Mix it right and you get rocket fuel.Point is it kills bacteria and virus RNA.
I do it whenever faced with mice shit. _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE

I was planning on going AAZ. Client came in with a Doka with a 1.9 AAZ . After road test, I really need more than that. I have a super low k AHU TDi missing a pump. I can get a core pump near free. I have an AAZ extra pump around. So, I'm thinking of doing MTDi with a Gilles pump. Anyone on the board use one of his pumps? Happy?
Also looking for sheet metal repair panel for battery tray. It's an original diesel so it's in the back close to the right tail light. I've looked around, I'm just not seeing it available. I guess not a common rust area. Should I make my own panel? Or find a donor piece? |

Remove the battery tray. Having the battery in the engine compartment is really hard on it. Here's my most recent solution.
As I just posted in another thread:
Andrew A. Libby wrote: |
It is the TDI add-ons like intercooler and VNT turbo that give it the added performance. The AAZ similarly tuned will produce similar power to the 1.9TDIs. However, it will do so while consuming 10-15% more fuel and 10-15% later in the rpms. Because of the later torque of the AAZ and its ability to rev higher, it is comfortable at highway speeds with stock WBX gearing combined with taller tires.
Considering the added cost of regearing the transaxle for a TDI and the added cost of either the wiring of a TDI or purchase of a mechanical TDI pump, it could take you longer than the life of the van to recoup the added cost. The TDI will have higher value on resale. |

AAZ vote here, I'm a fan. And being in Canada, it should be a no-brainer, they are everywhere north of the border, and dirt cheap. The AAZ with big pipes, intercooler, and added boost really performs. See my build link below, also check out vwdiesel.net and tdiclub.com for in-depth engine help. _________________ '86 Syncro CHC Top AAZ Turbodiesel

I do like the idea of quick turnaround time of putting an AAZ motor in . Especially since mine is an original diesel . Couple reasons I don't want AAZ . Crankshaft gear , the ahu and alh both have d shaft gears . AAZ's have the tooth style that likes to let go and bend your valves . The AAZ I have ideally should be rebuilt , and I'd send the crank out to be modded to the d shaft . So, more money . The ahu I have is crazy low k's . It will need a pump and new tbelt that's about it . Money wise it will cost me a g more to go tdi . I think I don't do it now I'll regret it . Plus I've never owned an mtdi . So I'm looking forward to that . The only thing I like about regular tdi is cruise control comes with it . I'll have to add an old school vw system to have cruise .
What have people done to convert non td oil pans to td ? I saw bricwerks has an adaptor . Anything in north America ? |
