I answered an ad on Craigslist for a Hurst Tee shifter tonight. Asking price: $40. The shifter is in very nice condition and I paid willingly. The seller was also selling his VW Thing, told me a sad story of how his engine overheated.

As I looked over the Thing, I noticed that someone had removed the metal around the engine inside the engine compartment, probably to make engine swap easier. Probably contributed to the overheat. The seller continued his story about how he obtained a used engine that had heat ducts, which he routed into his passenger compartment, as he feared the gas heater mounted up front. I asked him where the original shroud got to, and he showed it to me and sold it for an additional $20!

$60 for a very nice Hurst shifter and a 73 Thing engine shroud without heater ducts- that's as good as it gets for me.

Did you ask how much he wanted the Thing for? For the prices you got the other things for, I bet you could of got it for one hell of a deal.

Yes, there was the NSU based VW K70 that I think debuted in 69, a costly flop for VW, but one which taught them a thing or two about water cooled front wheel drive cars.
