Well guys.... I have some bad news to report.
The effort to reach the Madera show this weekend, has been abandoned.
This is due to broken bleeders, and a lack of time to invest...
This is all that I have the authority to comment on at this juncture... Dan will respond once he has the time off from work.
But seriously, all that's left is the brake pluming, and to wire the coil... fine tune the motor, and the carb... and an hour at most.
I/we did try though.... but Jedi luck was not on our side of the Force for this trip.
But....
Sorry Dan-Dan..... _________________

After a long hiatus, I am back. I finished up the shift rod, which was giving me never ending problems, and now have 4 forward gears and 1 reverse gear.
I went to bleed the brakes today, and ran into a problem. Me and a partner were bleeding the brakes with the 'him pumping and I watch the fluid come through the clear plastic hose' method and everything seemed fine. After the air was out of all the lines, there still appeared to be no pressure at the pedal. Where did I go wrong? Dual circuit master cylinder, wheel cylinders, hard and soft lines are all new. |

Did you adjust all the brakes before bleeding? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I didn't know the bleeder valves had to be over the brake lines...
Needless to say I took care of that. They still feel spongey, I'll have to go through and bleed them all again I suppose. Anyway, took her for a cruise around the block for the first time in at least 6 months. I've got a lot of bugs to work out, but it felt good to make some progress.
Here is a short video whipped together on my iPhone.

I wish I could've helped out earlier in the week... but I have Life working against me too.... all apologies, my VW brethren .
BTW: How'd you 'bench-bleed' the master cyl? If done correctly, you could've solved your own "squishy-ness" on your master cylinder.... before you posted this problem, brother-bear.

Dan-You do know the fronts need to be bled also, even though they are discs, right? That may explain some of the squishyness. The bleaders on those need to be as high as possible also.
And what is with the test drive? There were absolutely NO sparks or gouges in the asphalt. And you just cruised into your driveway. I thought you were going to slam that thang. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

I bled the front as well, just the top bleeder valve on one calliper was snapped off.. So instead of trying to spend all day getting that bleeder out, I removed the calliper, flipped it upside down to bleed it, then bolted it back on.. That was made my pedal go from hitting the floor, to having pressure.. Still didn't have complete stopping power though.. hmm..
And the test drive did goudge the driveway.. I just removed all the sound because all you could hear was the noisey electric fuel pump.
The ride around the block was WAYYYY smoother than I was expecting.. plenty of suspension travel and it is nice and soft, like I'm floating..

Awesome job Dan.
Looks great. Shit is SLAMMED!
Best thing I did bleeding wise was a simple gravity bleed.
Raise the front up and crack the furthest valve and put a tight tube on the valve into a can then let it sit for a few hours. Checking the fluid in the reserve often. It may take longer to fully bleed out but this has worked best for me. |

I lost interest I suppose.. The first year of ownership I busted my balls on it and putting all kinds of hours into it and think I just burnt myself out. This last year I've done practically nothing with it. I got it registered about a month ago in hoped that it would motivate me to get some use out of it, but it didn't. I drove it once and it went back to its parking spot. I think I enjoy the hunt and the build more than actually utilizing it. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, and for being as low as it is, it drives incredibly smooth.
It just sold this morning. The new owner showed appreciation for the bumps and bruises the bus has and has led me to believe he will keep it as such.
This is the car I've held onto the longest though, 2 years. Haha
I'll be back one day when I hunt down another |
