For the last few months I have been looking for a partial replacement for my daily driver 1992 Eurovan. The Euro is doing fine and is really bullet proof but the underbody rust from 21 years of Canadian Winters is having it's toll.
In order not to have to scramble finding a vehicle when the Eurovan goes terminal, I have been looking for another vehicle that can perform the same tasks and provide if not equal reliability to the Eurovan, at least offer ease of maintenance.
Reading the good deals thread here on The Samba, I came across a posting for a 1982 Parts Diesel Vanagon for $900 located in Winnipeg MB. We'll its a VW like the Eurovan and might even get better gas mileage, close enough for replacement
The linked kijiji ad was pretty low on information so I called the seller who didn't share much info other than it ran and started well. Well WTH its only $900 price and the fact that I can have it shipped to my house in Ontario for $350 SOLD!
A week later the Vanagon arrived. Upon initial inspection, the vehicle showed typical signs of hard use (worn interior, seats, paint, trim, etc) but strangely little serious rust.
I went to look at the engine but something was wrong, the stock airbox was missing replaced by a wierd K&N industrial style exposed airfilter...... Wait this isn't the stock engine but a 1.6 Turbo Diesel from a Golf or Jetta
To be continued with photos and less boring text |
