Okay, I'm a visitor from the Bay Window forum and I know NOTHING about these newfangled watercooled, power assisted things. I drive my dad's 86 diesel jetta down the way to get registration papers for my newly restored Westy, and as I turn into the parking lot power the steering makes a slight grindy noise and quits; it turns, but obviously not being power assisted any more. There's a hose disconnected just to the left of the passenger side front wheel and a puddle of power steering fluid under it when I stop it; I'm fairly sure it's the return line to the pump that's come off but Bentley shows it connected to the reservoir at that end and it's come off at some sort of assembly that I can't find in Bentley and can't identify. I'm fairly sure I can see where to reconnect it, but I wouldn't know if there's something missing. My question is twofold:
a. anybody got a picture of the return line connected where it ought to be, so I can know I'm looking at what I think I'm looking at?
b. Can I limp it the three miles or so home as is, as long as I tie the hose up so it isn't dragging on the ground?
Oh well, at least I've finished the Westy...
Thanks in advance for the help! |

Just disconnect the pump. Running it dry is a no no that will cause it to seize. YOu can run the car on manual... _________________ Retired attorney--Tort King. |
