| My 1981 diesel pickup smokes very little one day and then like a freight train the next. It might start out not smoking in the morning and then start or start out smoking and then quit. ANY help would be appreciated. |

Is the motor a high mile motor? Are you using tons of oil?
Check the air filter. If it is oil soaked, try replacing it. Maybe you have so much blow by it is pumping into the air cleaner. Are you pumping tons of motor oil thru this motor?
If it is just black smoke, then its way too rich. The pump might need to be worked on. Leaned out a bit.
What colour is the smoke? Black or blue? _________________ Retired attorney--Tort King. |

| The smoke is blue. It does have alot of miles but doesn't use that much oil. Drove the truck 25 miles to work this morning with very little smoke but it may smoke all the way home this evening. |

Oil burning. Change the air filter, put in a KYB. They wont soak up as much blow by. Probably splashing oil blowby up into the intake. Not really a big deal. High RPM's will push oil up thru the breather into the intake.
You might try an old 1.5l fix. Down on the block, where their is a flex tube that runs to the vacuum pump, put in a T. Plug in another hose up to the top of the valve cover. It equalizes the system, thus allowing oil to fall back into the pan rather than be kicked up into the intake.
The older 1.5's have a smaller oil drain hole on the head. Whey they get high miles, the blow by will get so bad it kicks oil up thru the breather into the intake. The truck/car will take off like its got a mind of its own. It just got a mouthful of motor oil. Once the oil burns off (about a mile or so) its back to normal...
The 1.6's got a larger oil drain on the head to stop such silliness.
Also, try using 20/50 oil. Sometimes you can cut down on oil consumption by switching grades _________________ Retired attorney--Tort King. |

If you put a t on the vaccum line and use it to equalize the pressure, wouldn't it negate the point of having a vaccum pump? _________________ -James T

No the vacuum pump is necessary for the power brake unit. The T equalized the pressure from the block and head. The old 1.5's had an issue of blowing motor oil into the intake....
At 4000 rmps, with 23.1 compression those little 4 bangers really rap up. WIth high mileage and blow by you can imagine the amount of gases that can get forced into the intake. They had a nasty habit running away from you at highway speeds, til the motor oil tossed in the intake burned off...usually soaked the air filter and cost you a quart of oil. _________________ Retired attorney--Tort King. |
