I read this awesome thread about an aux battery the Die Hard P-2 (Odyssey PC1750). It happens to be on sale for the next day so I'm considering buying one here:

What I'd like to know is if it will work with the gowesty charge kit here? Also, I have seen some people use a regular extension chord to charge their batteries. When is this necessary? Or can the aux battery just be charged with the alternator through the gowesty kit?
I'm a bit of a noob with aux batteries. |

you can do the job for a lot less than that
it means shopping around a little, all easily done on ebay, or here in the classifieds
i bought a split charge relay, and uprated voltage regulator for the back of the alternator, an 8 way fuse box and 100' for wiring for less
my install on lucy cost
$17 for the split charge relay
$5 for a karmann ghia fuse
and a little more for wiring
on top of the GW kit, you will still need some kind of fuse box _________________ lucy our westy

I see that van-cafe has the same kit (although a slightly different pic) for less. I may go that route. I'm not great at electrical stuff so just the instructions would be worth it for me!
But do these kits charge big batteries? GW only recommends their kit with their battery, but for a few bucks more the sears battery looks far superior! |

they should both charge any battery
there is a very much simpler way, all stuff you could easily put together
if you go into a junk yard and find any VW with a #53 relay in it, that will do the job, i have done them this way many times when i needed to work on the cheap _________________ lucy our westy

Ok, I think I will pull the trigger on the Die Hard battery today since it is the last day of the sale.
Then I was thinking of picking up the Yandina Combiner 100 Battery Combiner at Defender Marine for $59. Looks like a pretty slick alternative to the GW kit.
What else will I need to complete the setup? A fuse box? At first, all I plan on doing is hooking up the Aux to an inverter and also to run the radio and lights. So I'll need some more wire to run to the fuse.
I still don't understand if I need another charger? Or if the alternator will be enough juice to charge both batteries? |
