How is the speedometer held to the dash? The buggy I bought doesn't seem to be attached, it was a tight fit so it was fine but I removed it to fix the fuel gauge and now it moves around and wiggles. Are there supposed to be clamps or something? it is an original speedo from a '76 i think, that is what the buggy was built on. Also, the buggy speedometer has no lights or light sockets in it, I looked to buy them but at 6-7 dollars each plus the bulbs that seems a bit pricy for a tiny metal socket, are there any alternatives out there?

Hold it in any way possible... IF you have to add clamps so be it... Most speedo's have some mounting ears (tabs) or clamp system... IF yours is missing these you will have to adapt...

As for lamp sockets did you try in classified?

im assuming it looks like mine. mine was from a 74 superbeatle. it was loose in the donor bug so i have no idea how they are supposed to be mounted. i ended up jb weldeing it to my dash panel. i thought about maybe taking a piece of pvc piping and makig it fit around the body of the speedo and clamping it down with a big hose clamp. that would only hold it in the dash, not stop it from rotating. you could try asking the late beatle forum about mounting it.

as far as lights go, i got mine from wolfsberg west. i think i remember getting them alot cheaper than 6 bucks each.

In order to get the lights to work in a dune buggy this gauge must be grounded. Can I ground to any of the prongs on the housing or do I have to ground all of them?

ya, i grounded the speedo via one of the ground prongs on the speedo housing. works good. i think there were at least 4. the extra 3 worked good as a ground for other stuff like my gauges and stuff that i forgot to run a ground wire to.

basically once you ground the housing, everything on the speedo is is grounded.

well hold on now... now i cant remember. i know i grounded the speedo case via the ground prong to the right of the speedo cable. there is a couple ground prongs above the speedo cable to the right. i used those for my volt meter and temp gauge.

you can barely see them in the picture, but there are also two ground prongs between the idiot lights on the bottom of the speedo. i cant remember if i had to run another ground to those or not. im thinking not, but not sure. those three lights on the bottom look like they might be seperate. im not home so i cant look.

The three idiot lamps (OIL-ALT-SIGNAL) require 12 volts on prong that feeds "shell" of lamp sockets... Usually key switched 12 volts.... Tab on lamp sockets go to the the oil sender or turn signal flasher or terminal 61 of voltage regulator or D+ of alternator...

Only put a ground wire on main shell of speedo...

thats it!! now i remember. dales right. those 3 lower idiot lights that are isolated from the rest of the speedo are wired "backwards" in my mind. 12 volts go to what looks like the ground prong.

thanks everyone, that helps. it does look like the one in the photo, guess i'll have to figure the best way to hold it, the hose clamp may be the way to go. I guess i'll look in the classifieds for sockets, $3 is much better then $6 or more.

Very informative thread. I hope the bulbs from my old 6v gauge are still made in 12v.

I pulled a bulb from my 58 speedometer and the bulb appears to say "Hejalux 0,12". I'm guessing its an original 6v bulb. Is 0.12 the wattage?

got the bulb holders from wolfsberg west, they got here quick. I did decide to try led bulbs but I found them a lot cheaper here:

http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/ba9s-ba7s/ba7s-led-bulb-1-led/10/

and they were the same price as a regular bulb, they got here the same day, looking good. now to figure out how to fix the dash to put everything back together!
