Now I'm just confusing myself.. is it actually a VW replacement 1500?

I got to spend some time in the garage today because it was way too cold for cycling today. Spent a few hours installing FatMat (Dynamat alternative) on the floor and tunnel. Overall the stuff is pretty easy to install - and hoping it will cut down on some of the road noise. I also plan on installing inside the doors, trunk area and roof.
Also took the pedal assembly apart, re-greased everything, painted gloss black and installed the Unique Parts Speed Ball conversion kit. This thing really does make a difference on the pedal action.
Next up will install the pedal assembly, start plumbing the back brakes and hopefully get the steering / front brakes finished.

Nice going so far! You are indeed lucky to have such a solid, unrotted body.
Have you decided on the BRM wheels, or will you repaint the stockers (2-tone cream+black)?
Your engine definitely has the heads from a 40hp 1200. The intake manifold comes straight down to the head, and the attachment flange is perpendicular to the top of the head. The 1300's and later single-ports had an intake manifold that comes in slightly at an angle to the head. The plaque on the fan shroud is unusual. 44hp is the German DIN power rating normally associated with the 1500cc engine (equivalent to 53hp SAE). Still, for your $80 you have a solid base for a decent running engine. Will you take it apart as a precaution?
Have you decided on front disc brakes on those lowered spindles, or are you sticking with stock drums?
In 1990 I bought a '65 Beetle sedan "rolling shell" only about 15 miles from my house. It had a low-budget repaint in the stock original Fontana Grey but did not have an engine nor an interior. I bought it for $250 at the time . Ended up selling it to a coworker who assembled it and used it as a daily driver for a few years. I sold it for a bit more than my purchase price, and built a stock 1600 dual-port out of good used parts. It was great to see it running and driving from his efforts. |

I think I'm going to send the rear wheels off to be widened by 1", then have both of them powder coated. Depending on which color paint I choose - which I'm leaning towards Zenith Blue... perhaps white wheels? The brakes are going to be just drums for this car.
I'm already making plans for the next one... which will be more modified.. _________________ 1965 Beetle restoration project:
