I called yesterday seeking advice on what sort of motor to install in my '66 bug.
The sales rep (forgot his name) did not give me a warm & fuzzy feeling.
After telling him what I wanted out of the motor, he recommended a turnkey 2115 (I think). He said it would put out about 120hp. I told him, "Of course, I need to upgrade the brakes before I put that much motor in."
He said, "Not really." (Clue #1)
I asked about pricing. He said that motor went for $3750.00. (Clue #2).
I asked how they could sell a high performance motor for that price when others I've looked at go for almost twice that. The sales rep hesitated and said that the owner has been building air cooled motors for over 40 years and is "really good" at it. That sounded like a non-answer to me, and in my experience non-answers are given to deceive the questioner. (Clue #3).
My research into my dream motor continues. |

The guy is a crook and an idiot. Buy the book, build it yourself with local machine work and good parts. If you get a bad motor you will have no recourse. I tried to get a refund and the guy changed his social security number. How are these guys still doing business?
It's the truth.
Seriously. Build it yourself. It's a beautiful thing when it all comes together and you'll love it more when you hear it run for the first time and realize it was your mind, hands, and skills that made that happen. That's the whole point of owning an air cooled volkswagen.
I started this thread long ago (10 years+)when I was new to it. Build your own. Don't buy anything that gex has had their hands on. _________________ 1960 Dove Blue Kombi

Geeze, "A+" with six complaints, two unresolved?
This might explain it:

The BBB and Yelp are both essentially scams that operate based on members paying them to stay in good standing, in case people didn't know that.
Yelp is much worse from what I have read online. |
and now some companies have set it up in the purchasing agreement that you can be fined for giving them bad reviews _________________ '60 15 window walkthrough

Haha, I know what you are talking about and I think that place is getting investigated and sued now IIRC. _________________ How to Post Photos

Been 10 yrs. but never gave feedback.
I bought a zero mile rebuilt engine and transmission from GEX.
Engine came damaged. They did replace broken studs.
The engine made it about 7000 before I lost compression. Dripped oil the day I installed.
The transmission started making noises at about 10000 miles. I found small metal chunks when checking the drain plug.
In a nutshell, the product was crap that didn't last 10000 miles.
9/10 buyers usually share bad experiences. Not sure how they've stayed in business. _________________ Volkswagen Locksmith

Which book? I was given a book called How to Hotrod VW Engines. I want to build my first engine!
Sorry to hijack... I remember drooling over the GEX ads in HVW 15-20 years ago; good thing I was a teenager with more dreams than money! |
