Hey guys, I'm new to this forum, but it looks like a lot of knowledgable people read and post here... I'm kinda needing some pointing in the right direction. I've had my 71 super beetle for a couple years, but I'm relatively new to working on it, so I need some help! Here's the story: one day my car wouldnt start; i'd turn the key and just hear an electric hum as the battery drains... no turning over or anything. After some research, i determined there was a problem with the starter, so I ordered a new one from jc whitney and just installed it today, and put the newly-recharged battery back in too. So now, when i turn the key, the car turns over, but it sounds like its really struggling to turn... kinda like "grrrr-rrr-rr-r"... So, I really could use a hand getting started troubleshooting this! Thanks in advance!

could be as simple as bad battery connections particularly the ground, or the battery you think is "charged" is down a cell and has 12V but not enough guts to crank well. Or the JC whitney starter may well be a pile o crap.
Try jumper cables and jump start it, if it starts normally drive the car for about 15 mins and see if it charges the battery up... if it does the same thing the next day... ie GRRR RR RRR .... then the (after checking said cables etc) the battery may need replacment.

Also did you change the starter bushing?

check that your battery has water in it...I know that sounds stupid, but it's what happened to me...sounded like eggs frying when I turned the key.

but the battery always appeared charged...may need a bettery replacement.
