Domo,
the "circuit" board on our tail lights is new to me. I have never seen that kind before. What year is the van?

The boards on my 85 Doka looks like the Domo's lights on the right. Left looks like Alistair's.

Here is my switch. I put it in the upper right hand spot on dash. Lightbulb holder removed for shot.

Hmmm. Mine's got a rear defroster switch in the upper right - above the emergency flasher switch if we're speaking of the same location. The only blank I have is below the emergency flasher switch. Anyone have the switch Alistair and I are talking about (rear/front foglight switch) as factory original?

If you are looking for how to wire up the switch VC has it here- http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/page_556_142/factory_vw_fog_or_driving_light_switch.html
The vanagon fog light switch part number is supposed to start with a 251 prefix. What did your switch come from alistair?
The switches on the right side top to bottom are supposed to be emergency lights, defroster and then rear fog if equipped. They are all the same size so they could easily go in any position if you wanted to or weren't paying attention.

Yes. Turns both front and rear foglights at the same time on mine.

You don't have a 3 position switch but a 2 position switch? |

On the back of the fog light switch, there is supposed to be a white plastic covering that cover the ends of the wires to keep them from shorting out against other objects. I suspect that if one does not have that plastic piece, wrapping the back with electrical tape will serve the same purpose.
I haven't heard anyone discussing the wiring from the front of the van to the rear, so I'll add my 2 cents. In my '91 the main wiring loom (behind the instrument panel) running to the rear of the van contained an unused gray (I believe that is the color) wire.
When you open up the black electrical box in the left front of the engine compartment, you will find the other end of the gray wire ready for use. _________________ And then there were two...downsized to 83 Doka &

I grabbed that switch from a Vanagon/Transporter in the wreckers. It was a personal import I think, didn't have Canadian sticker on door jamb. I regret not snipping the white plastic part (as mentioned), wires are heat shrink protected over the female spades.
switch has 3 positions, off and 2 ons
edit: just had a look at online vag cat and it confirmed that the vanagon switch has part number 251 941 535. My switch has part #171 941 535.
Doug, i moved the defrogger switch to middle spot, hazard on bottom spot. I find it easier to reach the fog switch when its on the upper spot.
That van I mentioned had a Trauma heater installed, it was tempting...

ps Ben, I put this stuff up on my blog, this page: http://shufti.wordpress.com/2011/02/20/vanagon-n-american-vs-european-tail-lights/
not a very mobile friendly layout, but I tried _________________ '86 7 passenger syncro, converted to westy pop top, project still in progress

My Freudian slip... should have typed Truma heater.
Perhaps could be described as an European Atwood propane heater.

Yes, I have only seen the 3 position switch that is why I was asking.
Off, front fog on, front fog on and rear fog are the 3 positions.
The porsche fog light switch is a 2 position switch off and front /rear fog on. |

Hey SyncroDoka,
Now you've got me wondering. I always just clicked the switch until the lights went on. I'll have to check when I'm back in the Bay. I'm traveling in snow country w/o a Syncro. |

Oh, I thought it might have been a unit installed in a ambulance or something. They made all kinds of stuff in EU that I am still learning about. |

I have the stock switch sold by VanCafe installed in my van, three positions as described by Mario, off, front on, front and rear on, you feel a subtle click going from the second to the third, easy to miss if you just push the switch all the way in like you would do in a two position switch _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

The tail lights for EU and NA spec are the SAME. The only difference is this: the LHD lights for the EU spec have a contact in the inner lens of the left light for a fog light. This is reversed for the RHD versions. In the NA spec vans, there is NO contact for a light on the inner lens. However, this can be added and wired with no real issues. |
Old thread, but I'd like to us to be clear what the differences are. See link for details: http://shufti.wordpress.com/2011/02/20/vanagon-n-american-vs-european-tail-lights/

Here's a side-by-side comparison of the Euro vs US tail lenses with the upgrade 10w tail bulbs in both the tail light and the central lower "fog" light/reflector position.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqqToqhMHDc
Take away: DO THE UPGRADE. Add the central lower "fog" bulb connector, 10w bulb and jumper wire.
The central US lower reflector with added light isn't quite as bright as Euro, but sufficient. I switched to some used Euro Hella (not ULO) lenses, which gives more central lower tail light, but is lacking the silver reflector behind the turn signal, so I lose some turn signal strength. Eh, probably will just get new USA lenses when I need them again.
Note: Euro HELLA lenses fit USA (HELLA) holders, Euro ULO lenses don't. |
