Hey everyone, I have recently purchased a 1972 standard beetle. My first bug and have decided to replace the wiring harness, do to the previous owner thinking he was a electrician Shocked I have got the new one run and just need to plug the new harness into the fuse panel. its a new fuse panel, but the wiring instructions that I have are hand drawn. The drawing said that the perspective is from the inside the cabin point of view. but in every picture where its wiring in a new part of the harness, it seems to be changing perspective. I ordered the new harness from jbug if any of y'all have any experience with this diagram. Sorry for the long story but just wanted to see if anyone could help. I would love if it could be explained in the simplest way. for I have a hard time reading standard wiring diagrams. Embarassed

Thanks in advance,

Matt

I just did my 72 super, and the instructions weren't very clear. I used the bently manual's wiring diagram, and it was pretty much spot on. there are a few very minor slight differences, but easy enough to figure out in the manual.

Thanks for the input, would anyone happen to have a picture that they could post of this for me, all of my wires are color coded and I just need to plug them into the fuse panel. I have a couple of other books that I have purchased but none of them really go into that detail

Not sure if you tried the electrical diagrams in the technical section of the forum, but they are pretty helpful. I used it for my 71 Super and it was pretty spot on.

Here is the wiring diagram for your 72 from the technical section on here:

If your new wiring harness is CORRECTLY color coded, just look at the fuse block in the diagram here (labelled "S") and connect the wires accordingly.

What could be simpler Laughing

Notice the itty bitty numbers on the diagram on things like switches. There is a corrosponding itty bitty number on the switch itself so you don't have to guess which of the 8 connectors the red wire connects to.

You can save the large file and take it to Staples and have them print it on 11x17 paper for $3

Sorry for the late reply. I started using the wiring diagram. Easier than I thought it would be. I guess the multiple lines criss-crossing kind of discouraged me. Smile New question though. would anyone know how to wire in my horn. Wired it up to the harness and when the key is turned over the horn goes right to blowing. I believe I don't have the horn button grounded right. any tips. Very Happy

Found this in another thread:

when you pull the horn button off of your steering wheel there should be a short wire running from the button to the center of the wheel (where a brass ring makes contact with a metal tab on the turn signal switch assembly). Then the ground goes through the horn button to the turn signal switch wiring. here is a diagram from speedy jim's site. If everything inside the column is right, then taking the brown horn wire out to the other side of the horn should trigger it. hope this helps.

I suggest installing the speedometer, emergency flasher switch and flasher relay first.

There is a L and R output on the switch as well as the steering column. These are connected togeter L+L and R+R and both indicator lights front and back connects to this L to L and R to R obviously.

The relay may have 2 or 3 pins (only diffirence is 3 prongone has a 3rd terminal 31 which goes to ground). One of the pins is + and goes to + terminal on the flasher switch. The other is 49a this is connects to both the blk/grn/wh from the steering wheel as well as the 49a prong on the flasher switch, and also to the indicator warning light on the speedo (centre bulb).

When this is done, most of the hard work is done. Then the remaining bits for headlights and wipers can get connected up easily. And of course the ignition switch and engine wiring. It realy is easier than it looks at first. Once you learn to break down the circuit into its component blocks.

Thanks guys for all the help, its been a long time since posting, but I have it back running. headlight, hazards, tail lights, and turn signals are working. Still having a few problems though. My beetle was converted over to a alternator without a regulator. I don't think my alternator is charging my battery though. I charged the battery all last night and cranked it up this afternoon and it ran fine. I drove it down to the end of the to get gas and it wouldn't crank back up do to a dead battery. never had this problem before, I believe I wired my alternator wrong. any advise.

Will post pictures soon. Very Happy
