How do you know which quadrant of the disc to hold against or do you try to keep it in total 360degree contact? |

I use the free editing software that came with my computer, iMovie and a small point and shoot camera with video. Keep it simple!
I am no expert at a shrinking disk. This is the blind leading the blind here. The set I got had a little one and a big one. I don't have a large side grinder yet so I have only tried the little one. The disk will kind of find the high spots as I move it around. Once I feel it I put more pressure at the top of the disk and let it warm up. It does not have to glow. Full disk contact would mean the area is flat and just bog down the motor.

I've got a few hinge areas to repair on my truck also. I have used nut plate sections out of donor decklids to repair that area before...and it's no stronger, plus it takes a ton of time! I am going to copy your method of using new flat stock! Excellent idea, and looks to be WAY stronger! Thanks for posting this up!!!

I had read that this was going to be a challenge. Red is an extremely difficult color to get right. Our eyes are very sensitive to slight variations. Add to that the variations from the factory over the years and differing ages and oxidation. I am working with my second paint mixer. The first one did not work out. This new guy is very interested in getting it right. We spent three hours on this today. Our first attempts were all to milky then they went too much magenta. I don't want a lipstick pink single cab! It is worth getting it right as this paint is very expensive. My single cab needs at least two gallons.
The treasure chest door and gas flap are from different vehicles from swap meets. The gas flap was under three other colors and polished up ok. The area under the treasure chest lock still had the original gloss and the deepest color so we chose to match to that. We started with a Nason chip and ended way out in custom land.
The orange spot was the best match from the first guy. This is just finger painting. The bubbled area above my thumb is from the pint I will spray out this weekend. He won't give me the formula until I buy my first gallon. I will share it with you if it turns out to my liking.

Hi Kurt,
Are you going to be spraying single stage pain on your truck, or is it base and clear? I want to do single stage on my bus, so curious to see if you're using single stage. I was wondering what the single stage paint is like these days with all of the regulations here in Northern California, is it all water based?
I really enjoy all of your postings. Thanks for sharing all the details and for passing on your expertise and knowledge.

I sprayed my Turquoise bus with base / clear many years ago. I liked it when I did it but it does have a lot of depth, like a glazed donut. Not that solid color of a vintage VW. I am going with a single stage urethane this time. We can still get urethane here in the North Bay. I want this color to be solid looking with not too much shine. It is supposed to be an economical work truck after all. Thanks for the compliments. My expertise and knowledge were gained from working on my two VW projects. Everything else is just made up!

Kurt-I have a chunk of roof from over the DS door that has a good swath of original SWR on the INSIDE of the roof which had been covered with the headliner board and never exposed to sunlight. I can send that to you if you want to get the best match to original paint. I tried giving them ( I have several pieces) using an ad on this site with no takers. I will be keeping one for my own use, but you, or anyone reading this thread, are welcome to a piece if needed.
I can send you a pic if you want. I just don't want to post it in the Gallery and waste space. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

No slacking! I have been working hard. While waiting for the paint chip from cru62 to verify the sealing wax red color formula, I have been doing the rest of the blasting. I am now done with all the large parts blasting. I have cleaned the garage. What a mess! Any small parts blasting will be in the cabinet.
Scrapped off some layers with a razor blade. It was thick and came off in sheets.
Used a disk sander to remove most paint. Way faster than just blasting alone.
Blasted the rest off. This is a rare picture as that much bare metal is not left lying around for long.
The Mercedes is being used as a drying rack for the acid washed parts.
The gates will be disassembled and worked now that they are clean.

You're doing such a great job on this truck Kurt. I have to ask two questions-
1) Are you keeping track of the hours you have in this and if so, how many? When I did my restoration of my rusty 69 convertible, I wish I had!
2) Are you shooting for a completion date or do you have one in mind?

So, the average American watches I believe 4 hours of TV per day. So, your first post was 2-2013. If you worked on it each day for the avg, 365 days + roughly 4 months or an additional 120 days. 485 days X 4hrs a day = HOLY $hit or 1940 hours!
What the hell, times $80 per hour= $155,000.00 _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

That is not including all the hours I spent over the last 20 years keeping it running. All those upgrades, brakes, trans & boxes, steering and engine builds. All productive time well spent. I am sure I will spend more money on my truck than it will be worth on the market, not including time. Happily!
If I wanted a restored truck the most cost effective way is to buy one already done. My truck is special to me and the journey has enriched my life. VW people understand.

It's so true, plus you think any car is going to require maintenance and money. So how much more are your really paying? Parts are cheap in relation to modern cars. _________________ - Chris

You're putting me to shame Kurt, I have to admit I've been sneaking in a little TV. I hope you accomplish your goal of being back on the road this year, Funky is looking good! |
