as my muffler grows older and many more miles it is getting really loud, wondering if anyone has used an alternative to the round stainless one that comes with the kit, I would really like one that is pretty quiet.
thanks.

I had a stock type muffler that was really quiet. I lost some power and fuel mileage using it. I am back to the Magna Flow.

It was almost silent Crying or Very sad

funny I just saw that you could use a stock muffler, for me almost silent is great, a short trip for me (like in the last 5 days) is about 1000 miles, I really hate anything that adds to the already hard to quiet van.
thanks for chiming in!

I have tried about 6 different mufflers on a with different engine conversions. I think people get a lot of noise for very little gain in power withg free flowing mufflers. At first it sounds like the van is faster, later it is just annoying. I put two 2" mufflers on my turbo van replacing the one loud 2.5" turbo style muffler which people would tell you should make a big difference and I honestly couldn't tell the difference in power.

I put an Ernst 1.9 OEM muffler on a subie 2.0 then on a subie 2.5 and I was delighted with how quiet it was and the power difference wasn't noticable when I switched.

If you can fit an Ernst 1.9 stock muffler, I would try that. If not, look at different dimensions of the Walker Quiet Flow line and find one that fits.

You can also rummage around the junkyard with a sawzall and see what you can find. OEM mufflers on foreign cars are very high quality and you might find one that fits. I recently bought a few for around $10.ea. Usually OEM are the quietest.

I put a Quiet Flow SS muffler on mine that I got from Amazon for 60 bucks. Stock brackets and a perfect fit. I removed my cat as well, (MT!) but I feel like it provides a nice tone that you can hear when you want to, but cruises perfectly without a sound.

I have a muffler from an early 2000's Malibu on my svx conversion. The van is now quiter then when it had the 1.9lwbx. I'm very pleased.

You're using the stock muffler on the RMW exhaust?

Does anyone have a sound clip of the RMW set-up? I'm thinking about this for my 2.1 DJ motor, but do not want loud. Thanks

I spoke with Mike at RMW during BBB. He said that he was looking into a quieter muffler package also. The stock muffler when installed on a Subaru is just about a loud as the Magna Flow, from his comments.

As soon as someone finds one let me know too. I will look into the ones that Dave mentioned. I like quiet, stealth, and no exhaust noise. Maybe I am just getting old? I used to love "Cherry Bomb" glass packs!! Shocked

(Flame suit on). I bought the CA version of the Vanistan/RMW exhaust with the CAT. Beautifully constructed, a work of pipe-bending art. But, it was so loud, I took it off and sold it. When dimed up a hill in 3rd, it was deafening. The non-CA version may be better, but the muffler on mine was only about 12 inches long to accommodate the CAT. I got the GW set-up instead, and am happy with it. This is in no way a knock on the design, and the noise factor may be of no importance to some, but it was just too loud for me (and I've been playing in loud rock and roll bands for centuries). My $.02.

Also, I took it to my Vanagon-friendly muffler shop to see if a quieter muffler could be fitted. No room, no dice. Sad

Interesting. My RMW/Vanistan SSWBX exhaust (CA cat) is on a gowesty 2300 and it's a fraction louder, but I didn't really think it was much at all. I'm definitely used to it now.

Hey Hammy:

Do you have any pics of your Malibu muffler on your SVX? I have finally tired of the noise. My set up uses the SmallCar header, the "small football" Cat from Smallcar, and the muffler the Smallcar sells for the SVX conversion. I want quiet. (When I need noise, there are karts and motocross bikes for that.)

This set up is lowwwd! It's funny when cruising by sets off the car alarms on the street, but even that is getting very old.

I got my cat and muffler setup from Muffler Man on Edmonds (same place that did a muffler on my '71 Datsun 510 Wagon about 40 years ago...) and Joe's really good about fitting quiet mufflers. Smile

Bump: anybody have a sound clip of the RMW on a waterboxer? I'd really like to judge for myself the sound of this.

I have been running the RMW SS Exhaust on my 2.1 for almost 2 years now. When I first started it after the install, in the garage, I was concerned with how loud it seemed. Then, after driving, it wasn't as bad as I thought.

I'd say it is 20-25% louder than stock. I have grown to enjoy the exhaust quite a bit. It is a little loud on the highway when empty, but with luggage and bags in the back, the wind noise of the van is all you hear.

A 6" round Ford F-150 muffler was Derek Drew's choice for the H6s in his vans.
My only complaint with it was I couldn't hear the damn thing running Wink

Here it is on my 3.6r, but it was only mounted for a dyno run and removed for a much more flashy stainless muffler with a freer flowing design and sound.

Not sure of a part number and the muffler is long gone, I gave it away.
They are around $65 IIRC in the galvanized version shown above.

I will have to give that a try. When we were climbing up Imogene Pass a ranger from the forest service stopped us to see what the hell we were doing up there in a van? He was really interested in the Syncro and said he could hear us coming up the grades! Shocked

I like sneaking through the forests. Wink

The ability to stealth camp in locations that may not be advised was Derek's MO...it is a quiet muffler for sure.

My RMW muffler went from loud to real loud so I put the next size magna flow on and and now sounds like stock or better at all speeds. It is easy I just welded two nuts to the back of the muffler and used the same bracket as the smaller one.[img]
