Hello! Just bought a 1970 double cab and I'd like to have it gone over since I am new to air cooled and want to have this thing running fine while I figure it all out.
I took it to a shop in Dana point that specializes in vw and he wouldn't touch it! It's got a modified 1776 and progressive carb and he didn't want anything to do with it! Hope I'm not in trouble here with the set up I got.
Can anyone recommend a shop in the area that will "touch it"? |

post some photos. if a shop doesn't want to touch it, it sends a red flag up. by that i mean either the bus is a pile, the owner is a pile, or there is something way wrong somewhere between the two.
not saying you or your bus is a pile, but if a shop refuses work, it's for a reason. _________________

was the shop in Dana Point a shop that specializes in air cooled VW's or one that specializes in newer water cooled VW's? There are many shops that work on late VW's that won't touch air cooled. You need to find an air cooled specialist. Most shops in California charge $100 to $150 an hour labor so expect to pay that for whatever work is done.
BTW - you have a 45 year old car. Don't expect to find service for it as easy as a new car. This forum exists because most of us work on our own vw buses. _________________

If you are New to the south coast from up north then you should
probably head to the Costa Mesa area since there are more shops that
repair air cooled V.W.'s there.
I can tell you that ( C&f automotive) on Placentia ave. in Costa Mesa is a good one with the owner going back to the 60's.
Or Call' Bugpack also in Costa Mesa for referrals
There also is an old shop on PCH in San Clemente called 'Shade Tree'
just as you enter town from Dana Point but, i'm not sure the original
owner is still there.

The shop you're talking about is very reputable in the VW community down here however the owner has consistently turn away any aircooled that is not stock. It's his preference as he is a purist and enjoys stock unmodified engines. Hes probably seen too many hack jobs by all the kids and beach goers that bring crap to him expecting him to fix all the gremlins. I'd suspect he's been burned, lost money, blamed, or doesn't want to waste his time. Not implying this is case but just my thought on the subject.
My recommendation is to contact Doug Perrault, he's got a small shop down in the grotto of San Clemente. He'll take care of you. He's also reputable and a great resource. |

| Thanks for the replies. The guy was nice enough but he definitely had a thing against modified stuff. I've got a Subaru 2.5 in my van agin and he didn't like that idea either. Nice enough guy but geez. I'll try Doug. I've got a nice engine, it's just a 1776 progressive carb that I don't quite understand yet and want to get running a bit smoother while I educate myself. |
