Here's a couple of pics of my 63 Single Cab. I did all the work except the body/paint work. Suspension changes include Wide 5 spindles, Wolfgang IRS kit, "built" gearbox that started as a '72 IRS beetle gearbox but now has a Weedle super-diff, 4.125 R&P, 3.78/2.06/1.32/.93 gearing and HD covers, Type 2 CV's and Wolfgang axles. Rolls on after-market Sprints.
Power comes from a 2332cc combo that includes 4340 crank, H-beam 5.500" rods, CB Performance Super Pro CNC 44x37 heads, IDA's, FK10 cam, 10.3 to 1 compression, and a one-off Al's Headers side exit 1 5/8" merged exhaust and stainless chamber-style muffler.

Here are some photos of the L87 pearl white 1966 Porsche 3.6 powered single cab above. Like Greg mentioned it was on page 3 or 4 earlier on in this thread. The truck was built and put on the road for a short time then pulled completely apart and restored. It's powered by a 3.6 twin plugged 964 engine with a short nosed G50 5 speed and turbo brakes. It weighs in around 2600lbs. As you might imagine, its FAST!

That s.c 3.6 is looking good....
I noticed the front strut under the seat, would be great to see the suspension set-up, or a link to a build thread if there is one.
Also nice to see some details of the roll cage, I like the bar going through the vent, pondering that option myself, as running the bar below cuts off some of the front vis, though I am not sure I want to lose the vent function. _________________ Porsche powered mid-engine double cab build

Yes, it has struts up front. I forgot to mention but the front end uses 911 control arms, struts, etc. and the rear has a torsion tube from an 87-88 Carrera with 911 control arms, sway bars, etc. It's basically all Porsche parts underneath. The upper vent has been deleted as it now has fully functional a/c so it's not really needed. I used to have photos from early on in the build but I lost them when my old macbook's hard drive took a dump. As far as I know there was no build thread, it took about 6 years for this thing to get finished. I'll see if I can get some better photos to post from the owner. It belongs to a friend who I used to work for full time before I opened my own shop. I'm just posting photos b/c I know you guys will appreciate them.

Hey Josh. How have you been?
Thanks for posting all the pics of the 901 shop truck. Hard to get those guys to post pics when they're so busy with racing.
How's the new(ish) shop going for you? |

Looking good Harold.
Now get that turbo engine installed so you can test those brakes out on some 120 to 0 stops!
I am as usual a bit behind you, but have a 911 rack&pinion and just got a vanagon bevel box today. Thinking of going to a 928 S4 front suspension. Any thoughts? _________________ Porsche powered mid-engine double cab build

The bus should be up and running in early July. Working on the engine bay. Had a custom intercooler made that will fit into the divider wall at the front of the motor for better airflow.
What's the advantage of the 928 s4 suspension? |

Glad to hear your D.C. will be back on the road soon and boosted.
I have been researching the 928 front end and think it will be simpler to start with stock Porsche parts and fab the fitment side than to design the a-arms and geometry from scratch.
The 928 S4 front is rear steer and has the Brembo 4 piston calipers stock, which are slightly bigger than the 944 turbo brakes I have currently [though not needed].
The 928 is also no lightweight at around #3500 which should ensure it is strong enough for my rig.
I have not yet found a complete front end priced right and local but am open to leads.

Our '75 Carrera race car originally came with S4 front calipers & Turbo 2 rear calipers (they are slightly bigger than the 930 rear calipers). I found it to be pretty unbalanced, too much front bias. I got rid of the set up and went back to 930 calipers. To get the balance right in the dc you should consider a dual master set up with front/rear adjuster, just my .02.
Just rolling the bus around in the driveway I noticed a big improvement in the steering. All the slop was gone, and it was easier to turn. You may want to install the steering rack first.
A very cool front set up might be the ERP 935 set up. The advantage being the adjustable wheel base. They've also come out with a power steering version. I still like the Smart Racing Fox Shocks strut set up, but not sure if it's still available. The advantage being the adjustable spindle height and single adjustable nitrogen shocks. |

No kidding, that is cool.
Wasn't there a video of that bus falling on its side somewhere? |
