I was trying to find vacuum leaks, and I removed the clear/translucent hose that leads to the brake booster, the cloudy looking one in the picture.
The engine immediately dies, so we're good there..
But now the engine won't start. No other hoses or wires were removed, just this one, I did double check all of them to make sure I didn't inadvertently pull one off, but no, everything looks good.
Is this some sort of brake safety feature and I need to reset something? _________________ 1979 Deluxe Westy in Mexico Beige |

Other possibilities.
1) It is so lean now it doesn't want to run. The CSV won't come back on line until it cools back down.
2) Sometimes other wires get disconnected too - or the key gets left on and burns up a pertronix if you have one. _________________

It was only running for a few minutes when I pulled off the hose, so it wasn't hot.
I have a California-specific electronic distributor, I'l rule out burning it up trying to start it.
I have been through this engine top to bottom, I'm fairly familiar with where everything goes, and everything looks like it is where it belongs.
I just got back inside after wrapping all the joints in that are with electrical tape, there are zero vacuum leaks on that "circuit" now, but she still won;t start, no backfires.
I do smell gas after I lay on the key for a good 15-20 seconds, so maybe it is flooded? It's almost like it is getting no spark, I guess my next step is to pull a plug and check for spark.. all of this started just by pulling that hose. _________________ 1979 Deluxe Westy in Mexico Beige |

Is that "breather hose" connected to the S boot? It should be.

Not my picture.
This is really driving me crazy. I pulled a spark plug wire and I do have a healthy spark.
I smell gas after I crank it for a while, so I have fuel and spark, but why no fire? _________________ 1979 Deluxe Westy in Mexico Beige |

| Pull the plug off the CSV, if the TTS is telling the CSV to fire and the heads have gotten warm enough it will flood and not start. Check for spark by placing the distributor end of the coil wire 1/4" from a ground and seeing if the spark jumps that gap when you crank the engine. |

if it is flooded hold the throttle wide open and crank it for about 6 or 7 seconds and let it sit for a minute then try it again. If you smell gasoline it may be flooded as others suggest. _________________

This actually did the trick..
Crazy how removing a hose will flood the engine and strand you.
Thanks for the help! _________________ 1979 Deluxe Westy in Mexico Beige |

This was likely your problem, you ran the engine for just a short while which allowed the heads to get warm enough they didn't need enrichment, but the block had built up almost no heat so the TTS sensor was still telling the CSV then engine was cold and to pour on the fuel flooding the engine. I have seen this problem many times over the years, just a flaw in the way L-jet works on an aircooled engine. |
