When I did mine (just the lower colored part, not the white upper) it took 13 16oz cans. I still got compliments ten years after doing the job, though by then I had repainted the front panel one additional time.
I bought 16 can at $1 each from a hardware store going out of business, so I had 3 can left over for touch up.

No real need to paint the windows with Rustoleum. It's not as if you're preventing the glass from rusting. Any old cheap paint from the dollar store will do just as good. _________________ 71 Superbug

I think I used about 18 cans on the lower half and 8 or 9 on the roof. Still have a little of each color left for touchups.
Sounds like a lot of spray cans, but if you buy them right it's not bad. I had right at $30 total into finish paint.
Had a guy just this past weekend who knows the story say as he was walking past, "I still can't believe you did that yourself with spray paint . . . Looks awsome! What's it been - about five years, now?"

I recently painted the windshield lip with Rustoleum "Canvas White" and it was almost a perfect match to the original VW "Pastel White". The metal part of the dash I sprayed with the standard Flat Black and that actually was a perfect match

Once done right, I belive it does look closer to old paint "factory" the way it used to be. New paints dont look the same as the old stuff. _________________

4 years later and the thread is back to life lol!
my bus needs a paint job on the cheapz. from what I hear, cheap car paint will look bad after a couple years and possibly crack or chip. ive seen some maaco paint jobs go really bad after just a year. im spending $400 on new window weatherstripping since mine are done-zo! that being said I definetley want to choose the cheapest paint thatll last me 3-5 without chipping or cracking...
I will get a real professional expensive paint job done right in 3-5years when I graduate college, I am thinking rustoleum because it looks like it holds its color for years. anyone have pics of their rustoleum Vw's?? or even better photo updates of some of the buses posted years ago in this same thread??? looking for advice and photos from people who have done this to their buses _________________ Rosita the 73' Tin-top |

Cheap single stage paint will last and hold up much better than rustoleum. The macco paint jobs that are bad (some are ok) are mostly bad because the car was not prepped properly/at all. Rustoleum will work, expect to remove it all when you have it repainted in a few years.
I painted this bus with Rustoleum once rolled-on and once sprayed on. I would spray it if doing it again but the trick when using spray can rustoleum is to get semi gloss. Unless you want to put a ton on and wetsand for weeks. It's hard to get gloss spray paint to lay down evenly.

My advice is to see if your school or one nearby offers a body shop class where you can work on your bus. There are so many advantages to doing it this way. It is not a good idea to basically glom two gallons of paint on the bus with the thought of re-doing it later. Rustoleum has its uses, it works great for the trim on the house. Take your time, there are better options. _________________ 1971 7 seat Deluxe Station Wagon |

I do go to a technical school for auto mechanics, will have to see if their is a paint booth to my disposal or at least have a painter in training paint it...
would you advise single stage urethane enamel automotive paint against rustoleum?. Ive used rustoleum before and its a solid product but I guess theres auto paint for a reason, Do you guys have any reccomendations on single stage paint and where I can get the best bang for my buck???
however before I go any further... Is it possible to get 2 gallons of single stage paint and enough primer to paint my bus for under $250 or less?
howlong would a single stage paint job last if done right???
still leaning towards rustoleum but I may go the single stage route
if I did rustoleum then would clearcoating help out with uv and all that? _________________ Rosita the 73' Tin-top

I prefer single stage. I get so pumped up when I have my mask on that I don't think my heart would last through a two stage day. Single stage kind of forces you to RELAX & THINK about what you are doing.

There is not going to be any clear answer on this whole which way to go brother.
What would your grandpa say? Do it right the first time? You get what you pay for? Everything is relative?
All this is opinion based - and is lots of what you read already with style-technique-product. Bottom line is that anything you put on from water based latex paint to proper PPG professionally applied paint will protect - in varying degrees - period. Its all relative. Dont overthink it all.
I can tell you this - I painted that panel bus with the same intent you have. Put something on it that will last a couple years and look decent. Always knowing Ill come back and do it right later. I wanted to try the whole rustoleum thing and I thought it not bad. Not correct, but not bad. It suits the work horse for the moment. _________________
