That would make sense. Notice that it is the single screw style (there actually is a second screw underneath the arm) which is the latest version of the SWF Ribbed sem. _________________ John Henry

Yes, that makes it beeing a pleasure to work on it.
To straighten and paint the metal cover or work on the lens it is disassembled within seconds. _________________ Master of my domain! |

I just got this one. A SWF Sem.

This one is confusing to me:
These are both smooth semaphores, the top is Jan 54, the bottom is Feb 54. Shouldn't a smooth semaphore have a different part number from your ribbed semaphore? _________________

Jan 54 was the first month of smooth ones.
Maybe they used up the old bases for the first batch. _________________ Master of my domain! |

Nope, we have had lots of AL smooth bodied SWF semaphores and the smooth AL body is different from the ribbed when viewed from the side.

That's right Matt. I forgot about that.
Coincidentally, this mis-matched pair just showed up in the classifieds with the same base frame:

The semaphore in the top of the picture uses a smooth AL body while the bottom semaphore in the picture has the early ribbed body.
As VW/SWF transitioned from ribbed to smooth there was still a need to produce spare part ribbed semaphores so they went on smooth bodies. The following ribbed only/ribbed correct parts were used on the smooth bodies:
---Coil - the rubber bumper mount at the top/end of coil is differnet than smooth.
---Outside ribbed arm and lens
---Inside ribbed long brass bulbholder
---Inside ribbed short arm - to which the lens, outside arm and inside long bulbholder are mounted.
---Pin holding piston and piston retaining spring
The following parts are common to the SWF ribbed and smooth:
---Large U shaped retaining spring for piston pin
---Piston, although later D and F smooth vary from ea;lry ribbed smooth piston
---Coil type return spring that goes around hinge pin
---Fibre electrical contact plate to which wiring attaches.
---Large 6MM bolt-although later smooth bolts were shorter.
---6MM bolt c-clip - although later were smaller |

Have you seen any ribbed semaphores with date codes after Jan 54?
Could it also be that SWF just happened to change the body/frame sometime in the fall of 53 for some other reason than the switch to smooth outer arms? _________________

| The only thing I can think of is the SWF smooth body uses a little less metal, it all adds up as production accelerates greatly. The SHO body remained the same from grooved thru all smooth iterations. |

No, they used "I" despite what this thread says. I have restored several "IC"s myself..... _________________ John Henry

I know u restored alot, i was convinced it was september 51 after ur reply just wanted figure if letter "I" was used or this was just "J" bad stamp since at swf data code is mentioned that I and O was not used, seens it was, at least at semaphores.
Thanks alot for this info, small details that say a lot for those who want to learn more, i know more today. Thanks again. |

To clarify:
The date code thread says I and O were not used for the year and I was not used for the Month.
The date code thread said "A-M, I was not used" for the month stamp
I changed it to now say "A-L" instead.
Please confirm you have never seen an M for the month field, otherwise some stuff is going to be off _________________ How to Post Photos

M is used on SWF ribbed sems, I have restored several sets. Must be for the rare 13th German month. Weird...
