This part is inside the trunk, right near the brake fluid container. No idea what it is. Can't find anything in the book. Anyone know?

its a mileage counter.
trips the 'egr' light in your speedo every so-many miles to reimind you to change the filter.
there is a reset button on the box to turn the light off.

You should hook that up to a really loud buzzer with flashing red lights under the dash and then forget about it. Who knows what kind of excitement it might generate for you & your passengers when it suddenly goes off with no warning at some unknown time as you're driving down the road. ZOMBIE ALERT!
