Related to that, I was thinking of a mod so that the city lights were not on when the headlights were on. It is redundant, a simple relay circuit would probably do the job ... thoughts? |
I wouldn't do it. If your headlight goes out, you still have light in your headlight with the city light. So people still see a two lights, and identify you as a car with a broken headlight. Instead of a motorcycle...
If you are worried about power consumption, you could change it to a LED version. They might be available in "warm" white nowadays too. |
I was thinking of premature burnout of the city bulb. I rarely drive at night anyways, so I probably won't try to fix something that is not broken, it was just a thought.
There is one thing, when I do drive at night, with the headlights on , the Alternator light on the speedo glows (you can barely notice it is so dim). Do you, or Garba, see a similar thing? _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

I haven't driven my 1600i at night yet. But when I drive my other beetle, with Alfa Romeo engine, I do see the light glow a bit when I turn on headlights, wipers, windscreen blower and heater blower. But that is quite a high load on the system.
The Alfa engine has a 65A alternator, I don't know the value of the 1600i one. Isn't it 55A? _________________ homepage

I think so, I'm not worried about the glow, just an observation.
I think I was mistaken on the switch, the NA version would probably have 2 clicks as well, one click for the parking lights (which were just switched to the city lights for our cars) and one click for headlights.
In NA, the running lights would be on with the headlights, which explains why the city lights are on with the headlights. If I wanted to be fancy, I could whip up a relay circuit that switches off the city lights and switches on the running lights when the headlights come on. That would be more consistent with the lighting arrangements here.
As far as a burnt out light, I'm probably one of a rare crowd here in NA that carries a spare light and fuse kit; it's even a VW brand kit:
It's not a requirement here.... _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

concerning the headlight switch: the 1600i uses the 8-contact mk2 era switch (191 941 531 H). The same unit is used both in mexico and europe as there it switches on the orange running lights in the bumper at the first click and the headlights at the second; the city lights stay on together with the headlights also in europe (on modern cars, equipped with DRLs, when you switch the headligths on the DRLs go off and the city lights go on). Again, safety regulations as gerrelt mentioned.
I could not find 191 941 531 H neither NOS nor OEM. AFAIK it was superseded in europe by a non compatible reference (-K), maybe Antonio can locate one in mexico, but I found just easier to buy the febi-bilstein replacement. It looks different but it feels sturdy. _________________ cars:

ECS Tuning in the US has them, not OEM:

Maybe Antonio might have an OEM one _________________ 1971 Super Beetle (past)

interesting, (at least from the pics) it looks exactly like the febi-bilstein. There's likely a single manufacturer somewhere (somewhere in china, I suspect ) supplying those to different aftermarket spares companies. Luckily my OE switch cleaned up ok and is now in my good parts stash. _________________ cars:

Ottawa Ont, Christmas Eve, record high temps 63F (17C), and sunny.
A nice day for a drive with the roof open:
5 days later and a drop of 50 degrees, 14F (-10C), no more outings until the spring:

I took the light switch out of the car, and it rattled when I shook it...
So, I took it apart (which was surprisingly easy), and found that one of the "crab-like" metal things had fallen out of the white piece of plastic. the other one was quite loose too, and came out easily.
I bent the little legs out a bit, so they clamped a bit better, and put it back in.
Off course, first one of the two little springs wanted to escape, but luckily I found it again on the floor..
I put a little white grease (vaseline) on the contact points before assembling the switch.
Now I have two clicks again and the headlight turns on again! _________________ homepage

Ohw, spoke too soon... While testing my lights (because I deleted the taillight fuse), the light switch would not return to the "off" position...
So I took it out again, and discovered there was still something rattling inside.
I opened the switch again, but everything looked OK. But the part with the button was still rattling!
When removing the actual button, I found two small pieces op plastic inside.
These pieces got the switched jammed.
After re-assembly, it didn't rattle anymore, and it works again. _________________ homepage

glad you managed to fix the switch but... what exactly were those two plastic (metal? i can't tell from the pic) tabs attached to in the first place, and what for? _________________ cars:

I don't know, I was a bit in a hurry, so I didn't really investigate any further. I did a quick look, but I didn't see where they came from. _________________ homepage

My wife and kids made up a puzzle and photo book of my car as Christmas gifts
I love them, I put the puzzle together last night:

Nice presents hopkin! I'm afraid I'll have to wait for my kid to be a little older to have a similar treatment!
on a partially related question: my father offered me to have the brake fluid changed at his expense as a Christmas present, so I went to inspect the reservoir to check if some hoses needed replacing...
and found out whoever did the conversion to a Mk1 golf reservoir did a rather crude job and one of the hoses is rubbing where the tray has been cut (with a blunt spoon, I think ) to accomodate for the different outlet spacing. Nothing dangerous at the moment, but now I'm thinking of going back to the OE reservoir.
May I please ask other fellow mexi-owner for some pics of how the reservoir attaches to the tray? I've searched the internet and thesamba but with no luck (maybe I'm using the wrong keywords). It seems there is a tab on the back and a screw at the front, but I'm not sure as my tray has been molested. _________________ cars:

Thanks, I know they worked hard on the book and puzzle, great gift.
Here's some photos of the reservoir, I took several angles, I think the first shows what you are looking for. I think I need to top it up

Thanks, I checked and I think I can come up with a solution. by comparing what I have with your pics and another one I found on the web basically what they did is enlarging the square tab hole at the back to accomodate for the reservoir outlet. maybe I can just weld (or JB-weld) a small piece of metal to restore the shape of the hole and avoid sideways movement as the upper lip seems ok.
but first... I'll have to remove the reservoir and that's uncharted terrirory for me. _________________ cars:

Thanks hopkin, only information I'm missing at the moment is the exact dimensions of the square hole for the reservoir's rear locating tab.
This is going to be a long-term fix... I'll have to borrow or rig up a drain pump for the reservoir, remove it, plug the hoses and only then I'll be able to properly assess the kind/amount of work needed for the tray.
Now as I said working with brake fluid is a new thing for me, the only experience I have with it is when I once left my motorbike out in the sun and the liquid came out of the reservoir (overfilled at the dealership...) and ate all the paint it came in contact with.
I will use protective gloves and keep cloths and rugs at hand, I was thinking maybe some layers of plastic wrap can provide a degree of protection but really any tips on how performing the swap avoiding risks to the painted areas will be greatly appreciated! _________________ cars:
