The side mirror on my 71 Volkswagen bus would always fall down when driving so I took it off and discovered that the nut is stripped and probably needs a replacement (one of my friends said it may be savable)
I was wondering if anyone knew how to take it out and replace it? Or how I can rethread the nut? and could I just go to a local hard wear store to buy a new nut or would I have to get a NOS part?
Thanks _________________ 71 volkswagen bus |

The factory OE mirrors have a longer thread length and the nut has a recess to allow the threads future extension. I bought Wolfsburg mirrors and the thread part is not enough and there is no recess in the nut. So the combination of the two Wolfsburg parts does not leave enough thread to screw into the door. Also the door has a tapered recess that does not allow the threads to catch until they are in 3 thread. I couldn't get my new mirrors tight either.
OE arm is on the right.

The mirror captive nut is M16x1.5. You "might" be able to clean up the
threads with a tap. Otherwise, a very tricky cut and weld job to restore the
stock setup. You might then want to look into alternative mounting methods. |
A thread chaser is better than a tap for this. A tap will start cutting new threads if not started properly. Having said that, I have used a tap many times for cleaning threads without problems.
Since it it difficult to access and replace the nut, why not try a tiny bit of JBWeld on the threads and then use a tap. A clean tap through the threads first would probably clean the buggered threads for the JBWeld to stick and then the same tap for the final threads.

Thank you for your help, i cleaned out the bolt but it still wasn't working so I started to clean out the threads on the bolt and came to the conclusion that it was stripped so I bought a new mirror and it works great _________________ 71 volkswagen bus |
