Looks great!

Where did you guys go for the wheel alignment?

I'm having a hard time finding a place that will do ours in the Gilbert / Chandler area..

We dialed in the camber with the index marks on the ball joints and then Dan over at Competition Engineering checked out that and everything else. Seems to run nice and straight. We had the tires mounted by Discount - one shop near us had the proper equipment for the 5-wides. But then we later discovered that they did not balance the tires because they don't have the equipment for that. We have had it on the freeway at 65+ and it is nice and smooth so I guess we don't need to worry too much about that. Thought about the beads but Dan at CE says he has the balance set up rig at his shop, one of the few around for the 5-wides.

Now that we have drive the car a bit we are noticing some little tics. One annoying one is front disc brake noise - a rattling sound that goes away as soon a you apply any pressure to the brake pedal. Almost certainly this is due to the lack of anti-rattle shims for our EMPI front brake set up. Apparently, EMPI does not provide or even have anti-rattle shims for their brakes. A local shop told us to use Disc brake quiet to essentially "glue" the disk pads to the calipers.

Does anyone know if there is an anti-rattle shim that would work on the EMPI set up or will the "brake quiet" do the job. Not worried about brake function - they work just fine, but the noise is very distracting.

The disk brake quiet (glue) does hold the pads in place to dampen the noise from the pads sliding around in the calipers. The layer of glue between the two steel surfaces acts like a insulation.

Picked up some Disc brake quiet at NAPA and it did the job. Took the calipers off, painted on an even coat of the quiet material on the back side of the pads, let dry for 15 minutes, reinstalled and then stepped on the brakes. Can't believe EMPI does not provide some sort of anti-rattle shim.

Been hitting a few car shows with the bug. Always gets a lot of looks. Of course it helps that we seem to go to shows with few bugs, so we stand out a bit!

Love your car! Do you go to Buses By The Bridge in Lake Havadu City? I'd love to see your car in person.

Usually Janurary. It's a bus event where many of them camp out for the weekend but some other VW's show up. It's less of a car show and more of an event.

What a great project and great, great results. I'd give anything if me and my son could do a project. But, he's in the Air Force several states away, and may never be close to home again. Cherish your time together. I envy you. Great job.

Been a while since we checked in. The 66 is running great - if not leaving a little trail of oil wherever we park it Smile Seems like we miss every VW show in town for some reason or another, but we did pick up a top 10 award at a Toys for Tots show featuring mostly Mustangs and other Fords a few month ago.

The car looks really good! You both did an awesome job. If you want, there is a BBQ/Picnic on April 30 in Phoenix.
