A friend of mine just bought his first bug, it's a 1200 -63.
The problem is that it doesn't start.
The engine ignites occasionally with starter fluid.
The previous owner had the heads and cylinder removed and it hasn't been possible to start the engine since then.
The valve clearance is 0.004".
The compression is about 100 - 115 - 115 - 130.
It has new Bosch W8AC spark with 0.024" gap.
The distributor cap and rotor are new.
The condencer and breaker points are new and the gap is 0.016".
We've checked that the rotor points towards the mark in the distributor when the pulley is at TDC and both valves on cylinder 1 are closed and only one valve are closed at cylinder 3.
We set the timing with a test lamp and then checked it with a strobe light at starter rpm.
How do we proceed? |

Welcome to the samba.
Since it pops with started fluid.
Try filling the carb float bowl with petrol and see if its fires up. If so you have a fuel supply issue that needs to be corrected.
Good Luck.
EDIT:I believe the valve lash should be at least .006" on a 1200. Maybe even more than that. _________________ I have learned over the years.

That would depend on the studs (long or short to hold the rocker arms) used in the heads. That should be sorted out first before ruining the valves. .004" is way too tight either way. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Thanks for the replies.
There's fuel in the bowl. And I think it should fire more often with starter fluid, now it's maybe three to fem seconds between every pop.
How do we check the studs? |
