"Trip" (resettable odometer) speedometers had unique VW part numbers on the back, as mentioned above. I just installed a NOS date coded 1959 "trip" speedo in my 1959 Double-Cab a year ago, and it definitely had VW part number on the backside.
There were also unique "bumpout" impressions in the outer backside housings (that can be seen in the photos above - left side units) to accommodate the "trip" odometer guts. And you can clearly see those "bumpouts" in my photo of the backside of my "trip" speedo below.
Any speedo without those "bumpouts" would make me immediately suspect that the unit was made into a trip unit at some later date. I wish Corona Ryan would pop on here to further educate us on "trip" units.
I also have stored away a 1957 date coded Beetle "trip" speedo" that Corona Ryan completely restored for install on an upcoming project 1957 Beetle Kabriolett. It also has the VW "trip" part number on the backside and "bumpouts".
1957 Beetle "trip" speedometer after is came back from "Orange Empire Speedometer":
Notice also that both of the 1/10th mile wheels on these original VW "trip" speedos are silver-ish with red numbers...
I'm dropping my microphone now...

Looks like there are 2 bumpouts, left of the bakelite and bottom of the bulb on the right.
Good information, and as I suspected, the numbers are ink stamped on.
I've seen a few without any markings, which I believe were painted over by someone previously.
They also have BOTH the left and right bumps. Modified non trip to trip usually only have the right bump and not the left. |

The ink stamp only survived on my 120 kph speedo, the other one is with out an marks.
The 160 kph beetle speedo is parts of a Set for beetles with bigger engines back in the sixties.
They are sometimes seen in beetles with Oettinger engines.
I sold my Set at the last HO meeting.
