I have a 72 bus witha 1700, dual carbs(32 and 34 pdsit). bus runs real rich, but mostly has a huge stumble off idle. it had a 009 when i bought it, and want to know if i should keep it, or go back to the stock vac advance, which i would have to buy. I want to install a pertronix, but need to decide which dist to use first. and advice would be great. thanks.

Pertronix can be really nice, just be sure to keep tools and your points and condensor in case you end up with a failed unit out on the left side of nowhereville on a sunday night!Sorry cant say on dizzy choices, would consider changing mine if I knew it would run more efficiently as well. |

Most any of the after market elec ignitions will fit the stock, the 009 and the 050 (but the 050 takes a different rotor)
Still is a good Idea on the backup points and condenser...
I have to disagree with the 009 not working well with the type2/4 engine... I have had numerous busses in my care over the years both FI and carbed (stock if they were still good, web progressive and dual's)
MAYBE it has something to do with sealevel being more forgiving and the climate temperate 9 months out of the year but I have had little or no trouble that could not be solved by good tuning techniques....And something to do with driving style.... If you baby the shit out of your ride then you need a stock vacume unit... If you go like mad to keep from gettting ran over, flipped off and road raged then....
They haven't made 050's in a while and unless I'm mistaken they may be hard to find except I guess at swap meets..... |

funny it was mentioned about number 3 cyl. when i got this bus, it had a broken exhaust valve in number 3. coincidence? dont know. i may just snag a stock one and try it with points and see which is better, then buy the pertronix for it, so i only have to do it once. thanks for the input guys.

Yes there is some issues about #3 cylinder retard, I have seen other cylinders suffer dropped valves too. Keep the valve adjustments regular and the timing correct ect. and I have never had it happen to any that I built or maintained for others.... |
