Drove my buddies freshly built Syncro Westy today. Started around Thanksgiving with a worn Syncro hardtop. Typical story, full roof conversion with full interior, suspension rebuild and 2.5 Subaru conversion and more of that type of stuff. Oh yeah and the reason I am posting is the SCS in dash air.
I am so impressed, it makes me want to getoff my ass and get mine in. It is quiet and effective, the rotary dials are smooth and the controller is a fan Rheostat instead of a switch. Granted it was not cold today, but it cooled that cab down quickly and did a great job defrosting the fogged interior windows.
This was the first 2.5 Subaru I have driven in a Vanagon, it is so much nicer then my 2.2 Subaru, smoother take offs and a better power curve. If I didn't live in Ca . . . .

Anyone come up with a good use for the space behind the drivers tail light? Looks to bee a good cubic foot of space. Extra oil storage? Stash a few kilos? Mother in laws bunk?

My air cleaner fills up that space. The passenger side is reserved for a future oil cooler.

So 2 days ago my front G57 brake upgrade starting sounding metallic when braking intermittently. Since I need to keep going I figured I could deal with it later. At worst I figured I'd score the rotors.
I stepped on the brake pedal today and heard a CLANK and the pedal went to the floor. Upon inspection the piston had popped out. Somehow the pad wore thin and dropped out of its holder and then the piston popped out.
The new pads have a keeper that keeps them in the piston. So off to the flaps for a rebuild kit and some brake fluid.
The amazing thing is how little braking you have when only your rear brakes are working.
Lesson learned, fix obvious problems. I was due for a brake fluid change anyway.

There is something missing in this Forum. It has no punch anymore, a little antiseptic maybe.
Can someone help me put my finger on just what it is.

Today I parked my Westy at work. And turned around to look at it with immense satisfaction. I've never had a car like that, not even my tin tops.

http://jalopnik.com/why-the-volkswagen-vanagon-westfalia-lives-up-to-the-hy-1797322823

But everyone loves the Westfalia. It makes people smile and dream, more than any other camper can, and its resale value is bulletproof.

Besides, any car, no matter how bad it is, that instantly makes you happy and stress-free behind the wheel; a car that makes you realize that all the tiny, insignificant worries of your stressful life are nothing more than cosmic dust is worth every penny in my book.

I'm back in Kaneohe, but my '87 tintop needs a rebuilt steering rack and pump. I have an appointment with Steve for 25 September. Parts are in hand I'm tired of crawling on my back on concrete. Been FFA with my driver's side power window, got the passenger side working by using DeOxit on the connections and exercising them, then flooded the switch with LPS-1. Motor and regulator on order from Stacy for the driver's side, should be enroute. I'm ready to pull and install.

Oh, SAUSAGE! I forgot to get Flossie out of the garage at lunch today! Cosmo the Bluebird of Happiness must endure a head reseal, and I am letting my (now adult) daughter have the shop bay for the repair.... I hope she remembers the garage door prop stick before trying to get Flossie out... Here they are together a couple weeks ago... That time it was Flossie the portable tool/parts chest helping get the Spare alternator into Cosmo. Consequently, the trip they took went fine, but the next trip towards town after they returned, the driver side floppy seal blew. Yet another perfect fail. 1 mile from home!

Once you get the bell housing off you will see a collar on the main shaft with 2 Sir-clips on it. Slide the clip back and move the collar until you see the joint in the shaft. At that point you just un thread it in normal fashion.

Ohhhh, that's deep.

Funny they call our engines "Boxers" when not a single punch ever connects.

Then again, heads explode on contact so I get it now.

Actually they are not true boxers. A true boxer shares a rod journal and it perfectly opposed, our WBX is close but not a true boxer.
A Ferrari 512 is an example of a true boxer.

Mde me think of Bob Denson's 1987 Boxer engine .. Bob made virtually every part (except nuts, bolts, and cosworth valves):

My favorite racecar ever. An old friend's Dad had a 512M which friend tried to destroy at Laguna in maybe 1988.

Good info, Thanks.

Edit: Gears, that's awesome!

Since you're picking nits, I'll pick this one with you: you have this backwards.

A little background below. Note in both articles they take pains to say the exact opposite (how ironic) of what you're claiming:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_engine

"True boxers have each crankpin controlling only one piston/cylinder while the 180° engines, which superficially appear very similar, share crankpins. The 180° engine, which may be thought of as a type of V engine, is quite uncommon as it has all of the disadvantages of a flat engine, and few of the advantages."

"In 1896, Karl Benz invented the first internal combustion engine with horizontally opposed pistons. He called it the kontra engine, as the action of each side opposed the action of the other. This design has since been called the "boxer" engine because each pair of pistons moves in and out together, rather like the gloves of a boxer. The boxer engine has pairs of pistons reaching TDC simultaneously."

http://www.enginelabs.com/news/watch-a-70s-ferrari-formula-1-flat-12-engine-belch-fire-on-the-dyno/

"Although Ferrari put a “B” on the engine designation, it’s technically not a “boxer” engine because each crank pin supports two pistons. A traditional boxer engine has individual throws for each piston."

I'm having so much fun today: here's even a Ferrari specialist explaining the distinction:
http://www.ferraricraft.com/2010/02/when-is-flat-12-a-v12/

I have more if you want it.

Stick to cranks you know, like window cranks, because if you claim to know engine cranks, you could come off as a crank.

That tears it.

Westy-Matra for us, though. It was Pure Magic (except for the National Guard at the Bog) at the Glen and Montreal.

Yes, Yes, it's a V -- and a really tight fit:
