Bringing this back from the dead
what's the right way to size Oetiker clamps?
is it:
1. one size up from OD
2. one seize up from OD when installed over barb
3. OD should fall as close as possible to the middle of the Oetiker range
4. OD installed over barb should fall as close as possible to the middle of the Oetiker range
I have read that gates barricade OD is 14-14.5mm
here are the relevant clamps
16700013 12-14.5mm
16700014 12.3-14.8
16700015 12.8-15.3
16700016 13.2-15.7 |

Directly from the Oetiker catalog -

Clamp Sizing
The following applies as a guideline: To determine the correct
clamp diameter, push the hose onto the attaching material, (e.g.
the nipple), and then measure the outer diameter of the hose.
Select a clamp whose average value of the size range is slightly
greater than the hose’s outer diameter. To ensure full ToothLock®
engagement and a sufficient closure of the clamp the nominal
diameter has to be reduced by at least 2.2 mm (> 40% of the
original ear width) and the correct closing force has to be applied
during assembly. |
Because different hose brands and models could have different wall thicknesses, it is necessary to measure instead of assuming one clamp size will fit all 5/16" hose (for example). _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

Christopher nails it. i bought my Oetiker clamps based solely on the OD spec of the hose i bought.... mistake. they were too tight. you gotta measure the bump at the ferrule with the hose on.
i got the Oetiker on, but had to lube the hose with Sylglide to slide them over the ferrule bump.
