I need a little help. I can figure out how to mount the darned thing, but how much water should be put into this? And, how often do you pull the string? I need to get this Thermador to work for this weekend... lord knows what it will be like to drive from Phoenix to Irvine with my wife without a little cool air. Thanks.

Roll down the side window. Insert the swamp cooler in upper window channel & insert prop in lower channel. Roll up window. Install is done.

Fill it up about 40% with water, just enough to imerse the bale inside. Then pull the strings as frequently as needed to keep the bale moist. The hot air passes through the wet bale & into the interior of your car.

If you don't want to hunt down a good vintage unit, Mid America Motorworks has reproductions. One has 12v fan so it works even
when you're not moving.

You keep saying that in every thread about swamp coolers. I would figure by now you had figured it out. Laughing
Evaporative cooler. Air, water, etc....
What exactly do you want to know?

For example in the Thermador units there is a small (3/16) hole drilled in to the "intake cone" so that yuo fill it up until the water starts to run out of that hole.

The element is a full circle of swamp cooler material (USUALLY Aspen shavings), sandwiched between "square weave chicken wire" that has a round "end cap" on both ends. These end caps have a center hole in them that allows them to be installed on the center rod which has a spring around it. The cord is attached to the element assembly so that when you pull the cord, it rotates the element to wet the entire element and then the spring around the center post recoils the element (and the rope/string) back to the original position.

As cold air passes through the element the low humidity causes rapid evaporation of the water in the element thereby releasing water condensation into the air and bringing down the ambient temperature in relation to the relative humidity.

Is that the answer you need? Cause that's all there is to it. Wink

For more information on the REAL science behind the scene, research:"latent cooling of vaporization"

Copied from the other swamp cooler thread:

You can buy them here also: www.classicaire.com And the new ones don't use strings. They use the air velocity to continuously rotate the element.

I agree Hot wives are the best, especially when they are yours. Okay, when dudes insist on staring it gets a little old. But I would rather them be staring because the wife is hot rather than staring because some guys wife has booby-do (belly sticks out farther than the booby do).

Anyway, the old cold air cannon is mounted. No problems mounting the thing. One has to keep in mind if going to buy one of these things... they are not for air conditioning. This is evaporative cooling, meaning... it is cooler than the air outside, yet warmer than a/c. If you want cold air, good luck. I think that this thermador looks cool and works well. Hopefully it keeps us cool all the way to the VWClassic.

See you all in Irvine... row '62 type 1, from Arizona... where the rest of the world's heat comes from.

ICK, nothing like a plumpy gal with her belly hanging out of a shirt she should not be in, it reminds me of what Homer J. Simpson once said,

Did you notice by chance that there were three RHD models for sale this weekend? One of them (at the toy and lit show) may have been the same as the one at the OCTO show, but I saw another RHD Firestone for sale at the Classic swap meet area.

The one on the table at the toy and lit show was in "like NOS" condition for $420.00..... Not a bad investment for whoever picked it up.

I have noticed however, that an OG RHD Thermador model seems to be almost untouchable.

Does anyone have a schematic for one of these? I've never seen one in person but I'd like to build something similar for my Thing.

Thanks! Smile

Also, since the question was in regards to a "Thermador" brand swamp cooler, the answer to the "How much water?" question is simple. :

Look at it from the front. See the 4mm hole drilled into the "intake cone" there about halfway up? That is the overflow hole. Fill it up until water starts to drip out of that hole. That hole is startegically placed so that any overflow while driving is pushed by the air back up the cone and into the cooler again until this cycle results in enough evaporation that water no longer drains out of that hole.

As far as a diagram is concerned, different models have different components.

I'm getting ready to restore another one this week, so I'll take pictures of it while I am taking it down to the individual components.

I have one I'm getting ready to put put back together that I might be able to post up here if I get some pics today.

Please hold and smoke weed to elevator music until then............

I have rebuilt a couple of "Thermador" "Firestone" and a "SeaBreeze" myself. I have found that the prop rod is always missing, also the sash cords seem to alway need replacing.. I have one of those Classicair types alsothey cool exceptionally well. Have you tried that blue mesh materiel to replace the aspen pad in a swamp cooler? I am not too sure it works any better than Aspen pad materiel. I will admit to being a bit puzzled when it came to preloading the spring on a Thermadore brand cooler but, I got it figured out and it works like a champ. My Firestone model has been my test bed for cooler materiel and prop rod designs. That right hand drive design in the earlier post was "Sweet". Does anybody know if plans exist in print?
