Ok so the brake booster has a simple test in the bentley that my van passed.
I got the flex lines swapped in and the old ones looked pretty good and not that old. I bled the system and flushed all the fluid. Afterwards there was no change in condition. Brake lights on.
So I did the master cylinder and realized that I had bought the exact same unit as was in it already. And it too, looked pretty good, but I went ahead and swapped it in, and bled out lots of great looking fluid before I got a good pedal again. After it was done the lights were on STILL!! Then we realized that the lights would go out as you pressed the pedal then come back on. Somehow it occurred to us to re-examine the switch wiring and it turned out that the wires for the front most brake light switch pointing down on the master cyl. were swappeand around. I had previously tried to fix this problem when I found that very same switch all melted and replaced it. The plug was fused into a mess with the switch and I figured that was it. But the lights came back on later.
So the big question is did I throw parts at it foolishly or did the vanagon fool me? I wonder if my old master cyl is still good, it wasn t leaking. I never had to pump the brakes like on my old super beetle when its master was shot.
It’s possible I got the plug wires switched when I repaired the melted switch then but if I did then that doesn t explain why it melted in the first place. I have to admit I’m a little stumped. But then again I haven t driven it for long and maybe I’ve only temporary fixed it?! Again.

Have you been driving this for 4 years without proper functioning brakes?

Think about that, please. Talk to a lawyer, too.
