I found this part together some NOS parts.
Is this a VW bus part? Is the part number in the tag correct?

best guess the killer springs that hold the rear hatch open.

Concerning the part number in the tag I think that is not correct because I found this:

those are the springs used to hold up the rear hatch...and look to be used

I agree, I don't think NOS ones would have 2 different paint colors on them.
