I'm not surprised. Official SD city website. I found a couple of their other photos with wrong years. Not by much, just a year or two.

has 'fag windows' so a converted oval maybe, I like the 356 style rear reflectors |

(Chicago in the 60s.)
I'm always amazed to see era pictures with so few Beetles. It runs completely counter to my own memories of the time, where (I could swear) every fourth car was a VW. Maybe it's because I spent so many years in college towns.

Maybe more to do with where in the country pictures (like yours above) was taken. Places like Detroit with a heavy American car factory presence you would be hassled if you parked you VW in the employee parking lot at Ford or one of the others. You might even lose your job.

That's very true. Ironically enough, the photo above the Chicago picture I posted this morning was taken in Detroit. For sure, VWs were rare there in the 60s!
However quite a lot of the pictures I've found show fewer VWs than I remember, even many California photos. I think my memories are a tad skewed. There were a lot of Bugs on the road, but apparently not as many as I had remembered, relative to American iron.

Don't lose sight that VW's weren't huge sellers in cold weather markets like the N.E. and other really cold states. We all know the VW heaters were lacking in effectiveness even in warmer winter markets like Southern California.
