Hello!

Does anyone have any like that have already started in this topic? I’ve searched and have not had any luck finding anything. I’m rebuildong my first engine. It is a 1978 Type 4 FI engine. Does anyone have pictures of their setups to start it outside of the bus? I’ve seen a lot for carburetors, but is it possible to do with the FI?

Yes, I’ve done it with help from an electrical genius. I have lots of pictures to share.

Here's mine:

Control box and adapter from here:

You could use a bell housing instead of the adapter ring.

Yes. You need to make up a cable to connect to the chassis side of the double relay to provide power, fuel pump, starter, etc. connections. While you can do this with individual wires, I prefer to use the proper connector block and terminals (salvage block from a parted out bus or FI harness, or buy new). With the block, you only have to figure out the connections once. Avoids embarrassing mistakes...

That is impressive! What is the white wire running from the start around the engine? Also where did you mount your fuel pump?

The double relay can be replaced with two generic relays or even just switches. Basically you need 12v to the coil, the ECU and the ballast resister pack, and to the fuel pump, plus you need a start circuit. No need for a charging circuit if you have an other way to charge the battery, or just don't intend to run it down.

Yes, this absolutely the best approach. I didn't leave myself enough time to find that connector.

Thanks. That's 86A on the double relay to the starter IIRC. This is an excellent resource to illustrate: https://www.itinerant-air-cooled.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=5459 I cable tied the fuel pump to the leg of the engine stand. Top tip is not to drop your spare pump on the floor. It will leak massively if it lands on the crimped connections!

I wish I'd built a test stand sooner. I needed to split the case a couple of times after my first build and dropping it from the Bus each time was becoming a chore.
