I am now done with the rear brakes.... However the hand brake cable does not seem right. The out sleeve that runs from the backing plate to the tube might be too long. It gives plenty of room for the wheel to move up and down I guess. But you guys tell me. Is this right? Gotta do some digging to find out where I bought them and double check the part numbers etc... but I don't remember seeing any others out there.

Yeah, that's a little too much, could be for a 68.

My VW Bay bus parts book only shows hand brake cables starting from version "H". The "F" part you show
is probably for a split-window bus.

'72 bus probably used cable #211-609-701Q, 2960 mm long (measured from where to where I have no idea).

Compare the cable tube on a 68 (pic below) to Malcolm's pic, see where it ends on the next outrigger forward?, his tube goes all the way to the torsion tube. His cable may fit a splitty as well, never compared them.

You may be right. It seems several sites say that part # 211609701F is for the later split window years. But I bought from FCPeuro.com and they say it will fit a 72. Well it fits, I am just worried that it will not work.

As it turns out FCPeuro says they will take them back.... even tho they are installed. And they have Part Number: 211609701T which is 2960 mm long and the wrong cable is 3460 mm long.

2 steps forward one step back.

Thanks.

Clark

picture of the 3460mm cables. does anyone have a picture of the connection to the lever. 500mm is 19-3/8 inches. What does the rigging look like from the lever to the cables.

You seem to be missing several parts, and those cables are WAY too long. Diagram here of '72-up bay bus parking brake mechanism:

http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/handbrake-parking-brake-warning-light-striker.6743/

You'll need #31 and all the associated parts.

THis looks right to me.... the scalloped nuts look like they will rest in the depressions on the compensator, still allowing adjustment. 1/2 turn at a time.

Did I miss something? Not totally adjusted, but totally assembled at this point. Next will be the beam and the front suspension & brakes.

THis is the 19" shorter version of the cable.... fits nicely on this end and the back end too. The sleeve is only about 2" longer than the space it fits in, so I get just a bit of "S" from backing plate to the tube.

You are correct, the tension prevents them from unwinding and the rounded side allows for pulling from many angles.
