The brake lights stopped working on my '91 Vanagon. I checked the fuse, OK, checked the bulbs, OK. Replaced the switch, with correct part number, and now if the brake is pressed the brake light goes out, if it is not depressed the light is on! Help. It's a simple circuit how could this happen?

I did take the old switch apart and clean it but still does not work.

Did you accidentally switch the wires putting it back together?

Well, for one thing, aren't there two switches?

Also, I think there are 2-prong Switches and 3-prong switches just in case that is an issue.

The brake light switch(s) are mounted to the brake master cylinder. From memory, these cannot be taken apart and cleaned (but maybe they can). Any chance you mistook the cruise control defeat switch for the brake light switch?

The one picture on the top is the one that I got. That is the same part number that was on the bad one that I took out. It goes from the mounting plate and the break. Now I see that is for the cruise control not the break light! The other goes on the master cylinder.. Thanks!
