Hi all, I am looking at a 71 single cab and am wondering if anyone makes new hoops and bows. I know bus ware makes the actual canvas and tonneaus too. If I can't find hoops and bows, Ill just go with a tonneau. I know theres a guy who makes them for split trucks but I know there are some differences.

Well, seeing the amount of time that has passed since your initial posting, what did you end up going with?

Odd, huh?! Laughing

I actually just purchased that setup from Adam, hopefully will arrive before Christmas. I wanted to work with someone stateside, but Gregg is the go-to guy, but for $700 (hoops) plus $100 (flat rate shipping) that’s $800. Then i have to weld them back up, and finish with paint over the welds.

I just pulled the trigger on the NLAVW set shipped for $510. I’ll be sure to share photos and build quality info, since their products shots don’t show a whole lot on the hoops actual rigid-ness and correctness to an original set. I tend to like the bolt assemble option.

I also sourced the bows from a Samba member in GA. $150 shipped. I’m slowly working my way to having the canvas as well, but the damage with that to my wallet, I’ll have to sell a couple buses first.

I have the OE set up for my 71 s/c. in the end, I washed the canvas and it's all folded up in a sealed tote. I broke down the hoops and slats too

what i can tell you is moving the frame on/off the truck sucks. it's like trying to move a wet rope.

you'll also want to religiously flip the slats...they bow in a very short amount of time. at this point, my slats are kind of shot.

I have seen aluminum tube used for the slats. flattened on the ends to the correct thickness with a spacer installed to preventing a total crush.

I bought nlavw canvas tonneau cover. After one summer it shrank so much that I can’t use it anymore.

NLA was not very understandin or helpful. Said it was my fault because
I let it get wet in rainy day ??

So they products are show use only I quess.

The only real kicker for me is going to be how tall everything is mounted up. Roughly 7 1/2 feet tall, and I’m running taller all terrains, it isn’t going to fit in the shop anymore. The third bay door doesn’t have a motor, it’s manual lift which has more travel in it, I should measure that for clearance this morning.
Plus side if it is tall enough to accommodate the hoops, bad side is a I will have a bunch of shit to move and relocate.

Canvas is on the list but again, I have to come up with some extra cash. It’s a shame how expensive they’ve become.

You could get a half-height setup. Roof-height. That is my preference.

I have worked out the tile setup for both the single cab and double cab. The single cab has its original PVC canopy and hoops. I made the stingers myself out of 1x2 red oak. The slats are by Ken Hippensteel (https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=655024)

The double cab as a NOS PVC canopy, with OG hoops. Again, I made the stringers, and Ken H made the bed slats.

I intend to sell the double cab PVC tilt, since I want to go with a cab-height one.
