I swear I used the "search" option before I posted this.
I pulled the booster and master cylinder off of my '71 Double cab yesterday to see if the booster was any good since it hasn't been on the road since 1982. I was surprised that the brake lines unscrewed easily after sitting all those years and the booster works fine and looks like new on the inside. The reservoir is still in good shape and came off in one piece. I would like to take the master cylinder apart and see if it's worth rebuilding, but I can't get the plunger to come out. I took the bolt out of the top and applied compressed air to it, but the plunger only moves a bit. It looks like a plastic or Teflon piece stopping it from coming out the rest of the way. Is that supposed to come out first somehow? _________________ 1985 Diesel Jetta Coupe (temporarily retired at

Did you remove the boot? The plunger is retained by a snap ring, which will need to be removed to pull the plunger.
You can rebuild the master cylinders, but most times they can be pretty worn from water and age sitting. Never hurts to give it all a look.
I’ve had success buying rebuilt master cylinders from Rock Auto. Believe it or not, they’re reasonably priced and usually have 4 or 5 options, the top options being original ATE units. _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

I took out the snap ring and a rubber seal. There is only one snap ring, right? _________________ 1985 Diesel Jetta Coupe (temporarily retired at

That white plastic part seems to be what's stopping the plunger from coming out.
I figured the booster would look a lot worse than this.

If the inner piston locking screw has been removed and the pistons will not come out...tap it hard on a block of wood. Ray |

I got it. The first plunger came out eventually with compressed air, the second one by tapping it on a block of wood. Thanks for the advice. _________________ 1985 Diesel Jetta Coupe (temporarily retired at
