I have a 1980 with original engine. We just loaded it up for a week on the road. I installed an oil temp gauge (CHT gauge didn’t arrive in time). I was running a touch over 250 after a 20 minute slightly net uphill drive. Seems high. It never once decreased in temps, though there were few stretches of non-hwy downhill.
I mounting the sensor to a sandwich plate but as I was doing it I realized the sensor is about two inches from an exhaust pipe. I’m assuming this is going to throw off the reading and I’m going to appear to run too hot. Anyone have a problem with this. Assuming we don’t end up turning around because it can’t stay below 280 climbing the big mountain passes we are going to go over I’ll have to remount on the taco plate to compare.
Oh and don’t worry about that disconnected wire, those was a ground I ran for the oil pressure gauge

That's where you mount the sender.
250 is about normal, remote oil cooler is the only way to lower the temps but it's more trouble then it's worth, mine was anyways.
Truthfully all the oil temp guage and cht guage did was give me anieixty, stupid van ran for 30 years fine without them.
Your adventure begins, just keep it tuned, intact, and don't moidify it to much. _________________ My Art:
