I bought a Carter low pressure rotary fuel pump I installed on the chassis close to the fuel tank and I have it all hooked up right, with the hose coming from the tank to the gas filter that came with the pump where it says in but when I turn the key on the pump turns on but it's not pumping and all I hear is a gurgling sound. And I thought maybe you needed primed but when I took the hose off going to the engine and put my finger over it the gurgling sound will go away like it wants to build up pressure but it doesn't? Hmm what do you think? Thanks

Sounds like you either have the inlet/outlet reversed, or the wire polarity reversed. The pump is currently pushing air into the fuel tank.

Yeah that's what I thought but looking at this filter where it says IN on it I have it coming from the tank it looks like it's hooked up right but how do you reverse the polarity?

There are arrows on the pump as well.
I haven’t tried reversing the polarity on mine to see if it pumps backwards though.

By the way you don’t have any Ads.
I was looking forward to some groovy bumper stickers.

So do you reverse the polarity simply by changing the wires around? Thanks

Yep....

Did you notice the plus (+) and minus (-) on connection point?

Thanks, that's what the problem was as I had the wires hooked up backwards I didn't realize would run like that, but now I'm having problems with it not cranking which isn't the first time as sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't, which I cleaned the battery posts which ia a good battery and made sure it has a good ground and disconnected the wires on the starter to make sure everything was clean and reconnected them but still no luck. Also tried tapping the solenoid to see if I could free it up but that wasn't successful either so I'll just keep playing with it.

Did you try bypassing everything by using screwdriver to short between hot wire from battery to terminal on solenoid?....

Might have a wiring problem anywhere between ignition switch and solenoid...

Might look into hard start relay if problem with ign. switch or wiring...

Problem could also be mechanical like a badly worn bushing in bell housing that supports starter shaft...

So I got it to crank again which I discovered was just a faulty wire I replaced running to the starter, and now that I got it cranking again and Weber 34 ITC carbs all hooked up (which is why I started doing all this) it will start with some pumping of the pedal but it seems to be backfiring and not staying running. And I had the timing set at 7.5 degrees BTDC with a 009 distributor and advanced it to 12° BTDC from the advice of a friend but that didn't help. I have all the plug wires hooked up right. And have the initial settings at 1.5 turns out on the throttle and first tried 2 turns out on the mixture screw then tried turning it quarter turns either way but no difference. And for some reason I'm thinking I might have a vacuum leak but finding it hard to check by spraying some starter fluid around while it's running, but having a hard time doing that since I'm by myself and can't keep it running long enough for me to get back there. So what do you think? Thanks again
