Your 83 would have come with a white cube filter before the pump, but it is an upgrade to install the later canister style filter after the pump. If you do this you will need to make an adapter to go from the 7-8mm hose coming from the tank to the 11mm hose going into the fuel pump. Some vendors sell an adapter to do this. Don't be tempted to keep the cube filter if you go with the later style one ad the cube filter will still clog regularly and need frequent replacement.
FWIW, on my 83 1/2 I had to carry a box of cube filters with me on trips as the extended driving stirred up the sediment in the tank so I had to change them out every few days. I eventually changed to the later style filter and haven't replaced a filter in a dozen years. Probably time to replace that now ancient filter just for sh*ts and grins though.

Wildthings, Thanks!
When I first got the van I actually let my dad do some of the work while I handed him wrenches. We did the Bosch fuel filter upgrade the first 3 months I had the van.
I replaced the filter the other day and realized the fuel filter is between the fuel pump and fuel tank. So I need to fix this.

The large metal filter goes behind the fuel pump- between it and the engine.
If you want to use the small plastic pre-filter, that goes between the tank and the pump.
Did you see that nice pre-filter mansispeed just dropped Brandon? |
I did see that! It reminded me to ask this question _________________ "Jo Ann" - '83.5 Westfalia EJ22e w/Peloquin

Yes, I'm aware of the procedure. Hot engine and tranny, before I check I move the shifter, slowly, through each position, I leave the engine on then check the dipstick.
I just want to know how much ATF is the difference between the two dots on the dipstick. |
Probably a quart between the marks, just add a half quart and see where the level ends up. |
I've added a LOT of trans fluid while mine leaked, it is not a qt between marks.
Closer to a pint if memory serves.......
More importantly, where did the fluid go?
External leak?
If not, check your final drive oil level, make sure it us not being sucked into there!

External leak... Small leak at the torque converter seal.
I should maybe check the differential, for peace of mind. No heat exchanger so no problem with coolant at least. _________________ '90 Little Blue Truck, 2WD auto, FAS GenV 2.0 NA (AVH) |

Can the door lock be easily rekeyed? I don't know if it was replaced, but it doesnt lock with any of the keys the PO gave me when selling the van. The ignition key works with all the other locks. Very annoying to have to get out of the passenger side to fully lock the van. Is there a rekey kit available?
Edit because I searched: Totally hacky but this is exactly what I was considering doing last night. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=456974&highlight=rekey+locks _________________ '87 Syncro Ferric Oxyhydroxide Superleggera Edition

Yes, very easily. As found in the FAQs sticky at the top of the forum: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=553954
I had to do mine - I had three keys between the four doors plus the ignition key! However my ignition key was so completely different to the door keys that matching that as well was never going to happen. At least now there's only one key for all the doors. _________________ Jim Crowther

Yes.
- Get a matching set of five cores and install them in each lock
- Re-key the passenger door by swapping the wafers (aka tumblers) to the same as the other cores. The first post below is a good pictorial. No drilling req'd.

Looking to see if anyone has a 2020 recommendation for a battery? Know it needs to Group 41, was looking at the NAPA ones, DieHard. _________________ 1988 Wolfsburg Edition - TinTop

If its worth anything or not, here's the scoop from my local Napa guys, that I've gotten to know over the years and they seem decent. They brand a variety of batteries under the Napa logo, many others, like DieHard also do this. Most of the batteries out there come from just a small handful of plants. The Group 41 that Napa sells is likely made at the same place as many many other brand names, and they are internally identical. The case might get some different color plastic, and the terminals might vary, but otherwise they are pretty much all the same.
I like Napa's warranty, and they say the 41 will be available from them for a long time to come.
Good luck making that fit into your idea of what Value means.

Group 41 is the oem size and is a very tight fit. Some T5s (DIN code, see chart below) offer 650 CCA, fit easily and allow space for additional wires, fuses, etc.
This is what I installed a year ago based on info from this thread...

Thanks Gents. Ended up doing the DieHard from Advanced Auto since they had it in stock and are around the corner. Used a couple coupons and was able to take care of it there. _________________ 1988 Wolfsburg Edition - TinTop

How is the glove box strike plate supposed to attach?
I removed a dealer installed AC and the strike plate was part of the evap assembly.
I've bought a new plastic glove box strike plate but the dash no longer seems to have a place to attach it.
There is no material where it would go to screw into.
I think I'm missing a part, but don't know what.
Looking straight on at where the glove box sits
Looking up from the floor to where the strike plate would attach if there was a bracket or something sticking out from behind the dash

Hmmm.... Found a picture of the piece I'm missing.
The "lip" under the dash above the glove box.
No idea how to find/fabricate that. _________________ 1980 Westfalia (Manual) California 141000 Miles |

Here are some photos from my 1990 so there may be differences with compared to your 1980.

Does anyone know the part number for the oil dipstick for a 1.9WBX? Mine "broke" somehow, pretty sure the end isn't in the oil pan but needless to say I would like to replace it. I can currently read nothing below the "full" mark. I don't have easy access to any wrecker locally that might have one. a PN or other compatible PN would be great. My WWW searches have been fruitless _________________ '84 1.9WBX Camper (Penny)
