Had the engine and trans rebuilt in my 1967 bug a few years back. Recently been having white smoke at start up? Also huge MPG drop.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Also on bumpy roads I'm hearing a clunk, thump or bump from the rear? I think maybe swing arm?
Anybody have a suspension expert here in SoCal? |

White smoke = Water.
Blue smoke = Oil.
Black smoke = Fuel.
Are you sure it's white?
Regarding the thunk over bumps. Read this thread. It may be your issue.

As Rustavenger posted, white smoke is water. Remove the oil fill cap, and if you see a lot of nasty brown stuff, that tells you its water, usually from too many short drives that dont allow the oil to get hot enough to burn off any condensation.
Regarding the thunk, I have experienced a thunk from shocks fitting loose on the bolts possibly due to worn shock bushings, and have also experienced a thunk from worn out, and missing rubber pads where the body bolts to the frame, near the top of the torsion/upper shock area. |

You are not telling us where you live so or what the weather is like. In my part of the world every internal combustion engine produces white smoke all winter long. And yes you use more gas in the winter. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |
